IBA Ordinary Congress: ‘Olympics need boxing’, says Kremlev; USA, Switzerland return to fold

Reintegration of different federations from the United States and Switzerland; termination of the membership of German and Dutch federations; and an unequivocal stance hitting out against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – these were the key takeaways from the Ordinary Congress of the International Boxing Association (IBA) held in Dubai on Saturday, which took place in the background of one of the most turbulent years in amateur boxing history. For the first time in its 129-year history, the IOC kicked out a sports governing body from the Olympic family when it expelled the IBA in June after a four-year-long dispute over alleged financial instability, poor governance, and corruption in refereeing decisions. In the aftermath, the IBA did not take charge of hosting the boxing even...

IOC chief Thomas Bach on Tuesday slammed the suspended global governing body of boxing — the International Boxing Association (IBA) headed by Russian Umar Kremlev — for their lack of integrity as the sport finds itself out of the initial program for Los Angeles 2028. The IBA (earlier known as AIBA) has been suspended since 2019, with the IOC hosting the boxing competition at Tokyo 2020. The IOC will also host boxing at the Paris Olympics. Talking to a select group of journalists in Mumbai ahead of the IOC session, Bach said: “With the IBA there’s no ongoing process, for us the case is closed. There will be no boxing with IBA in the Olympic program. It’s done! Full stop! We gave them four years, they have not met conditions set by us. The way they’re expressing themselves now and they’r...

Sports court rejects IBA appeal to reverse stripping of its recognition; IOC condemns leadership language

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has failed to reverse the stripping of its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday rejecting its urgent appeal. The CAS decision comes after the IOC decided two weeks ago to strip the IBA of its recognition as the official international body for the sport over its failure to meet reform criteria. On Tuesday the IOC Executive Board also objected to comments made by the IBA leadership at a regional meeting in Brazil. “The President of the Appeals Arbitration Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has today dismissed the IBA’s urgent request,” CAS said. The IOC had suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance, finance, refereeing and ethical issues and did not in...
