On the Indore pitch | Desperation can be inspiring — but it can be embarrassing, too

India’s captain Rohit Sharma leaves the pitch after Australia won the third cricket Test match against India in Indore, on March 3, 2023 | Photo Credit: AP When a team loses, it is a cliché to say the players didn’t want to win desperately enough. For the losers, that is both comfort and justification.Desperation might be a strange quality to seek in sport. It can be inspirational, as when an Anil Kumble, broken jaw wired up, bowls in a Test match (and claims the wicket of Brian Lara). It can be disheartening as when players alter the condition of the ball with sandpaper in a win-at-all-costs approach. India are beginning to show some desperation too. Skipper Rohit Sharma said at the end of the Indore Test which they lost on a turner that these were the kind of wickets India would ...

Border-Gavaskar Trophy | In Indore, we doubled down on what we’d set out to achieve initially: Andrew McDonald

Moorthy Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has admitted that visiting teams need to be "near perfect" to challenge India in their own backyard, something they sought in Indore by "doubling down" on what they had set out to achieve initially. Hammered by the hosts inside three days in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, Australia fought back strongly to claim the third match on an Indore pitch that offered vicious turn and variable bounce. "You have almost got to be near perfect against India in India. I think this game (Indore Test) besides that 6 for 11 was near perfect," McDonald was quoted as saying 'ESPNcricinfo'. Accor...

Changed ball made a lot of difference: Dinesh Karthik | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In the defence of a meagre 75 on Day 3 morning of the Indore Test, India raised some hopes with premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin snapping Aussie opener Umsan Khawaja with the second-ball of the day. For the next 10 overs, the Australian batters Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne looked absolutely rattled and were beaten left, right and centre by Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. But then a ball change in the 11th over unsettled the India bowlers as Head and Labuschagne counter-attacked with a flurry of boundaries. Ashwin was seemingly let down by the change of ball which proved to be softer and Australian batters found it easier to score off. Commentator Dinesh Karthik after the match pointed out that the change of ball did make a difference and worked in favour of the visitors....

India may simulate English conditions in Ahmedabad Test to prepare for WTC Final, hints captain Rohit Sharma

Having already retained the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy, India lead 2-0 in the four Test series against Australia and walk into the third in Indore as firm favorites. With that taken into account, it is a ‘possibility’ per Indian captain Rohit Sharma that the hosts try to simulate English conditions in Ahmedabad to prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship final, if they wrap up the series in Indore. “It will be a different ball game (facing Australia in England) for both teams, actually. There is definitely a possibility of that (preparing seaming conditions in Ahmedabad). We have already spoken about it. IND vs AUS: Steve Smith says Australia batsmen will ditch ‘risky tempo’ in third Test

Australia’s stand-in skipper Steve Smith said their batsmen will aim to slow things down at the crease when they take on India in the third test in Indore starting on Wednesday after risky shot-making cost them dearly in the previous match. Australia’s hopes of reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have been extinguished following back-to-back defeats in Nagpur and New Delhi, with the touring batsmen struggling to score on spin-friendly wickets. Smith was among those who played reckless sweep shots in their second innings in the Indian capital only to fall lbw or be bowled by spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who have taken 31 wickets between them in two matches. Australia went on to lose that match by six wickets for their second consecutive defeat inside three days. “I...
