On the Indore pitch | Desperation can be inspiring — but it can be embarrassing, too

India’s captain Rohit Sharma leaves the pitch after Australia won the third cricket Test match against India in Indore, on March 3, 2023 | Photo Credit: AP When a team loses, it is a cliché to say the players didn’t want to win desperately enough. For the losers, that is both comfort and justification.Desperation might be a strange quality to seek in sport. It can be inspirational, as when an Anil Kumble, broken jaw wired up, bowls in a Test match (and claims the wicket of Brian Lara). It can be disheartening as when players alter the condition of the ball with sandpaper in a win-at-all-costs approach. India are beginning to show some desperation too. Skipper Rohit Sharma said at the end of the Indore Test which they lost on a turner that these were the kind of wickets India would ...

IND vs AUS: ‘Key to Australia’s turnaround was to get India out cheaply in first innings’ believes Ian Chappell

Former captain Ian Chappell believes getting India out cheaply in the first morning of the third Test here, on a pitch that offered vicious turn and uneven bounce, was key to Australia’s turnaround in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian batters lacked application and were dismissed for 109 and 163 in two innings of the match, which Australia won by an emphatic nine wickets to seal their place in the World Test Championship final. Australia’s victory came after they lost the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi inside three days. “The key was to bowling India out cheaply in the first innings. Once they (Australia) did that they gave themselves a chance to get a decent lead. It wasn’t a huge lead but a decent and useful one,” the legendary Chappell was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. ...

Mayhem. Not upto Test standards: Waugh, Clarke, Hayden slam the pitch

Former Aussie Test captain Michael Clarke has called the Indore pitch “crap”, according to Fox sports. “What is this pitch we’re playing on,” he told Sky Sports Radio. “For me, it’s the puff and dust that’s being picked up from either the quicks or the spinners. It shows it’s only going to get worse. It’s like a Day 3 pitch on Day 1 in India. “You don’t want to see that. India could have been bowled out for 70.” Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket during the day’s play the pitch was “Not up to Test standard.” “That was mayhem. The pitch is not up to Test standard. The ball going through the top within the first 20 minutes of the Test match. That’s not good enough,” Waugh told Fox. 🏏 Pitch on Day 2 ☀️ #INDvAUS 3rd Test, Indore 🏟 pic.twitter.com/vbzGfV0EPG — The Cricket Wire (@TheCricketWire)...

IND vs AUS: Why did the Indore pitch offer wicked turn and variable bounce on the morning of Day 1?

The pitch which was a mix of red and black is not new to Indian players. But prior to the Test, as has been the case throughout the series, there was selective watering. Though it’s a common practice, what made it so hard for Indian batsmen was the fact that the moisture content – black soil tends to absorb more of it, which made it a bit damp. So whenever the ball landed in those parts – which had a bit of grass cover – it kept low. And whenever the ball landed in the dry area – mostly red soil – it found a sharp turn and bounce. Selective watering is a regular feature in Indian pitches but works better if the pitch isn’t a mixed-soil in nature. Black and red soils are contrasting as it is, offering different bounce but the selective watering meant it was even more of a contrast here....

‘These kinds of surfaces are not good for Test cricket’: Matthew Hayden reacts on Indore pitch

IND vs AUS 3rd Test: Having won the toss and batting first, India have had a horrific start on Day 1 of the third Test in Indore. The hosts lost 5 for 45 after the Aussies introduced spin bowling in the sixth over of the innings. Reacting on the kind of surface Indore has, former Australia opener and now commentator Matthew Hayden said, “No way spinners should come to bowl in the sixth over. This is the reason I don’t like these kinds of surfaces. It shouldn’t be keeping this low and turning so much on Day 1. It doesn’t matter whether Australia wins this Test or India. These kinds of surfaces are not good for Test cricket.” “You are allowed to have a four-five days Test match. At this pace I feel sorry for the fans, I don’t think this Test will go for Day 4,” he added during his comment...
