FIFA-AFC team meeting with CoA ‘gone off well’, advisory committee formed by CoA disbanded | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The first round of talks between the visiting FIFA-AFC team and the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the affairs of Indian football has "gone off well" and the world body is unlikely to impose a ban on the country, according to well-placed sources. However, nothing is official as of now and a final picture on what FIFA may do or recommend could come only after the second round of talks that the visiting officials will have with the CoA members on Thursday, before they leave the country. "It was a very good and constructive meeting. The meeting went off very well. Both sides were happy with the outcome of today's meeting," a top source who is involved in the whole process told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "The sense from today's meeting was ...

‘Some stakeholders’ had focussed on their projects rather than committing to national team: Igor Stimac | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac on Saturday made a veiled attack on some powerful entities associated with the game in the country, saying "some stakeholders" had focussed on their projects rather than committing to help the national side rise in profile. This was not the first time Stimac has talked about things beyond the field of play and relating to football administration. On Wednesday, a day after he guided India to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup by topping Group D in Kolkata, he lashed out at the messy state of affairs grappling with the national federation. The AIFF is currently run by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after the Praful Patel-led dispensation was shown the door for violating the National Sports Code. India coach Stimac hits out at AIFF after historic Asian Cup qualification | Football News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac has lashed out at the messy state of affairs grappling with the national federation (AIFF), a day after his side qualified for AFC Asian Cup for the second consecutive time. The AIFF is currently run by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after the Praful Patel-led federation was found to have violated the National Sports Code. While an immediate suspension by FIFA because of third-party intervention is out of cards, Stimac questioned the timing of the issue, which has cast a shadow on India's qualification for a prestigious tournament like the AFC Asian Cup. "For such an important tournament, was this the time to do this? Was anybody thinking how that could affect the dressing room and the players?" Stimac a...

ISL just comfort football: Igor Stimac | Football News – Times of India

India's top league is of a modest standard, feels the national coachKOLKATA: National coach Igor Stimac is not too convinced that India's top most football tournament - the Indian Super League, is helping in the growth of the game in the country as much as it should. "ISL is just comfort football in its present form," the coach said during an interaction here on Tuesday. "It gives good salary to the players and they are in a comfortable space. In the ISL, when a player receives a pass, he has enough time to think about his next move. But in international football, you don't get that time. You have to make an instant decision and move on." The Croatian legend clearly feels India's top league is really of a modest standard. He has his reasons for it. "When I was coming g to India as the c...

From Blasters to Gokulam: How Kerala rediscovered its passion for football

As Bino George, Kerala’s Santosh Trophy-winning coach, puts it: “More than ‘we are back’, it’s ‘we are back on track.’” That much is indisputable. The football teams from the calm, southern backwaters are creating a splash. With Gokulam Kerala beating Mohammedan Sporting 2-1 in Saturday’s season finale to become the first team to defend the I-League title, the coastal state now has teams dominating all levels of domestic football – champions of the I-League, champions of women’s league, winners of the national championship aka Santosh Trophy and runners-up of the top division, the Indian Super League (ISL). Their run also settles one of the biggest paradoxes in Indian sport; that of a state so obsessed, so crazy about football and yet, a laggard at the national level, living in the aft...

ISL final: Hyderabad gives Kerala the blues

Hyderabad FC goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani saved three penalties in the tie-breaker and won his team its maiden Indian Super League title. This was after the final against Kerala Blasters on Sunday couldn’t provide a winner in 120 minutes of football. Hyderabad, only three seasons old, came last in their inaugural ISL campaign, and had missed out on the playoffs by two points last year. They first scored a late equaliser to make it 1-1, before prevailing from the penalty spot. For Kerala, this was a third defeat in the ISL final, after stumbling at the finish line in 2014 and 2016 as well. An almost-capacity stadium in Panaji was largely filled with Kerala supporters, who had made the 15-hour bus journey to the Goan capital. During the first 10 minutes, neither team was able to string...

ISL final: First time winners guaranteed as Kerala take on Hyderabad

The Indian Super League will have a new winner after Kerala Blasters go up against a resurgent Hyderabad FC in the final on Sunday. While it would be Hyderabad’s maiden final appearance, Kerala Blasters will be competing in the final for the third time. In 2014 and 2016, Kerala Blasters had made it to the finals, but on both occasions, they had lost to erstwhile ATK, and thus their dream of winning the coveted ISL Trophy remained unfulfilled. Hyderabad FC qualified after a 3-2 win on aggregate over ATK Mohun Bagan despite losing the second leg of the semi-final 0-1. Hyderabad had won the first leg 3-1 through goals from Bartholomew Ogbeche, Yasir Mohammad and Javier Siverio. Rock-solid Kerala Blasters hold Jamshedpur 1-1, enter ISL final

Kerala Blasters FC entered the ISL final for the first time since 2016 after playing out a 1-1 draw with Jamshedpur FC on Tuesday and pipping the League Shield winners 2-1 on aggregate over double leg semi-finals. Adrian Luna (18th) opened the scoring for Kerala with a stunning goal before Pronay Halder (50th) pulled one back for the Red Miners, who needed one more goal to take the game to extra time but another solid performance by the Kerala backline ensured they held firm to confirm a place in the summit clash. In the first leg, Sahal Abdul Samad scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Kerala who made it to their third ISL final. They were the finalists in the inaugural 2014 edition as well. The yellow shirts started the second leg without the injured Sahal but showed no signs of slowi...

Stimac hails Sahal, onus on Kerala Blasters midfielder to replicate club form for country

Igor Stimac is unlike a lot of coaches. He isn’t shy of talking about individual players on public forums – hyping them up, or even declaring who his favourites are in the team – like some of his contemporaries are. On Monday, he couldn’t stop gushing about Sahal Abdul Samad, a player everyone has been raving about in the Indian Super League. “If I would say I have a few favourite players, he would be one of them. He has creativity, passion and understands football,” Stimac said, as the national team began its preparation for the twin friendlies against Bahrain and Belarus next week. “We know his qualities but players need to perform and he is doing it. He has had a great season.” Indeed, Sahal has. Players like Sahal, who play with a lot of flair and creativity, have been rare to come ...

ISL: Hyderabad rally to beat ATK Mohun Bagan 3-1, put one foot in final | Football News – Times of India

BAMBOLIM: Hyderabad FC put one foot in what would be their maiden final appearance after scripting a come-from-behind 3-1 win over ATK Mohun Bagan in the first-leg of the Indian Super League second semifinal on Saturday. Roy Krishna helped ATKMB take the lead but the Kolkata side's joy was short-lived as Bartholomew Ogbeche (45th) equalised at the stroke of half time before Yasir Mohammad (58th) and Javier Siviero (64th) sealed Hyderabad's victory. The two teams will go up against each other again on Wednesday for the second leg with ATKMB needing to find the back of the net at least twice to stand a chance of advancing to their second successive summit clash. ATKMB seemed to be the better side in the opening exchanges. Hyderabad did miss Asish Rai and his absence was felt most when the...

ISL: Sahal goal helps Kerala take upper hand over Jamshedpur | Football News – Times of India

MARGAO: Kerala Blasters inched closer to a place in the final with a 1-0 victory over Jamshedpur FC courtesy a Sahal Abdul Samad goal in the first leg of the Indian Super League semifinal on Friday. Sahal scored in the 38th minute to hand Kerala the lead and it could have been 2-0 for the yellow shirts had Adrian Luna's knuckleball free-kick not ricochetted off the woodwork. Kerala's defence was rock-solid too, withstanding the initial threat from Jamshedpur with Marko Leskovic leading from the front. League Shield winners Jamshedpur looked off-colour upfront with Daniel Chima Chukwu spurning two gilt-edged chances in the first half and Greg Stewart also missing his usual trickery in the final third. The second leg, on Thursday, will be the decider but Kerala will go into the tie with a...

Old Premier League hand Coyle making Jamshedpur punch above their weight in ISL

A little more than a decade ago, Owen Coyle was seen as the man who could save Arsenal’s sinking ship. Back then, around 2010-11, Coyle was the man with the magic touch in English football. He got Burnley promoted to the Premier League after more than 30 years. Then, he turned relegation-rustlers Bolton Wanderers into a respected mid-table side. Just around that time, when Arsene Wenger came under scrutiny after a string of poor seasons, Coyle, whose stock continued to rise, was linked to the top job with the Gunners. The move never materialised. But Coyle’s teams never stopped overachieving. He worked his magic, albeit briefly, with Houston Dynamo in USA’s Major League Soccer, and a couple of years later, came to India and turned around Chennaiyin’s fortunes in the Indian Super League ...
