‘Axar Patel’s promotion ahead of Virat Kohli hard to understand’: Sunil Gavaskar

India had lost two wickets in the chase of the 145-run target when they sent the left-handed Axar Patel ahead of Virat Kohli at No. 4. India were reduced to 45 for 4 at stumps on day 3 with Axar unbeaten on 26. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t quite pleased with the move. “It doesn’t send good signals to Kohli. To the world’s best batsman that you bat down. Unless Kohli himself asked for it; then it’s different matter. We don’t know what happenned in change room. But it’s hard to understand. Axar has played well, of course,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports. It didn’t help Kohli much as he fell to just 1 in 22 balls, edging to short-leg. Bangladesh’s off spinner Mehidy Miraz stunned the Indians with a three-wicket haul from his 8 overs to turn the pressure on India, who now need 1...

French minister wants FIFA probe as team targeted by insults at home and abroad

The distasteful taunting of France striker Kylian Mbappe by some Argentina fans amid celebrations in Buenos Aires to welcome back the World Cup winners should be investigated by soccer’s world governing body FIFA, a senior French cabinet minister said. During Argentina’s jubilant homecoming a group of fans set alight a makeshift coffin lid adorned with a cross and picture of Mbappe. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also clutched a toy baby with Mbappe’s face on during an open-top bus parade through the capital. Images of both went viral on social media. Meanwhile, France’s soccer federation and an anti-racism charity will file legal complaints against individuals who hurled racist insults at Mbappe and his team mates on social media following the World Cup final defeat on penalties. England recall Jofra Archer for South Africa ODI tour

England have named fast bowler Jofra Archer in their 14-man squad for the three-match One-Day International series in South Africa next month, while there is a first call-up in the 50-over format for in-form batsman Harry Brook. Archer had been sidelined by an elbow problem but is fit again and hoping to push for a place in England’s Ashes test series in June. He has not played ODIs since March 2021. Archer has been signed by the Cape Town Indians Twenty20 franchise and will play in the SA20 league from early January, though the competition will break for a little over a week so as not to clash with England’s tour. Brook has been rewarded for his superb recent test form in Pakistan, while opener Ben Duckett could play his first ODI since 2016. England have also included seamer Reece Top...

Russian hurdler stripped of 2012 Olympics gold for doping

Russian 400-meter hurdler Natalya Antyukh will lose her gold medal from the 2012 London Games due to doping, putting American Lashinda Demus in position to be named the champion more than a decade after the race. The Athletics Integrity Unit, which oversees doping cases in track and field, announced Wednesday that Antyukh had not appealed a penalty handed down two months ago that included the stripping of her results from July 2012 through June 2013. The AIU said the IOC could now “proceed with the reallocation of medals and the update of the IOC database.” Zuzana Hejnová of the Czech Republic and Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica are in line to receive silver and bronze. AIU said Antyukh, who had already been serving a four-year ban, received the added sanction of having the 2012 results stri...

World Cup-winning blind cricketers seek financial support, proper roadmap

The World Cup-winning India captain Ajay Kumar Reddy on Monday urged the BCCI to support blind cricket, saying it will go a long way in bringing professionalism and the much-needed financial boost to their game. The Indian team for the blind recently won the T20 World Cup for the third consecutive time, defeating Bangladesh at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. But despite the achievements, 10 players in the 17-member squad are jobless and due to the lack of financial support and many find it “difficult to pursue the sport” as they are “preoccupied” with earning livelihood. “We have won the World Cup for the third consecutive time but we don’t have a title sponsor,” said Reddy, who scored a century in the final. “It’s very difficult to play cricket when we know we have the bigger t...

Gabba pitch was pretty spicy, didn’t allow fair contest: Dean Elgar

South Africa skipper Dean Elgar was critical of the Gabba pitch after losing the opening Test against Australia inside two days, terming it a “pretty spicy” track that didn’t allow a “fair” contest. As many as 34 wickets fell in two days as South Africa were bowled out for 152 and 99 with Australia claiming a six-wicket win. “Still trying to wrap my head around what’s happened. Pretty spicy wicket, bowlers were licking their lips. Challenging for the batters which is okay, but on the flipside I don’t see this as a fair contest,” Elgar said after the match.Subscriber Only StoriesPremiumPremiumPremiumPremium It was the second-fastest Test ever completed in Australia as only 867 balls were bowled, fetching 15 wickets on the first day and another 19 on the second day. “You’ve gotta ask your...
