R Vaishali leaves behind tag of being ‘Praggnanandhaa’s sister’ after becoming India’s 84th Grandmaster

Late on Friday, playing at the IV El Llobregat Open tournament in Spain, Vaishali Rameshbabu defeated FM Tamer Selbes in a match that had much bigger implications. The victory nudged Vaishali’s rating points to over 2500, which marked her entry into the elusive Indian grandmaster club: current membership of 84. Vaishali also becomes a part of an even smaller group: Indian women to achieve the grandmaster title, which has just three members, Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli besides Vaishali. Reaching the pinnacle of chess’ pecking order — a grandmaster title — will also go a long way in liberating Vaishali from the tag of being ‘Praggnanandhaa’s sister’, as she has been referred to over the years. While it was Vaishali who first started playing the sport, it was her younger brother who...

Vaishali and Praggnanandhaa make history as the first-ever brother-sister duo to become Grandmasters

Vaishali Rameshbabu became only the third female grandmaster from India after Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli after she crossed the 2500 FIDE ratings to earn the grandmaster title at the IV El Llobregat Open in Spain on Friday. The 22-year-old has defeated Turkish FM Tamer Tarik Selbes (2238) in the second round to surpass rating and has started the tournament with two consecutive wins. “I am very happy to finally completed the title. It’s just two rounds. I am also focusing on the tournament. But I am really happy with the GM title,” told Chess.com. “I’ve finally achieved a goal of mine since I started playing chess. I was so close to it so, I was really excited but there was some pressure as well. My game was not so good in the middle but somehow, I managed to win. “I have quali...

‘The Indians… disciples of Vishy… are coming for Magnus’: Karthikeyan Murali becomes 3rd Indian to defeat Magnus Carlsen in classical chess

India’s Karthikeyan Murali became the third Indian chess player to defeat World No 1 Magnus Carlsen in classical chess after he prevailed over the Norwegian at the Qatar Masters tournament. In a round-robin contest, the Indian won despite playing with black pieces in round 7. Earlier, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand and Pentala Harikrishna had defeated Carlsen (Hari had beaten Carlsen when he was a 14-year-old, back in 2005). Carlsen took a gamble which backfired, whereas the Indian was rewarded for soldiering on in the face of severe time trouble, always finding decent moves barely seconds before his time had run out. “It was very exciting playing Magnus for the first time. I had never played him before this. He has a good edge in the opening but it was quite unclear. M...

The past month has given ample evidence of how bright the future of Indian chess is, with D Gukesh rising to the India No 1 spot and R Praggnanandha making it to the final of the prestigious FIDE World Cup. But besides their current form and results, what other aspects will separate the upcoming generation of chess players? “A certain amount of fanaticism,” believes Viswanathan Anand, India’s first grandmaster. “If they’re very young, I want to see a certain amount of fanaticism. I think fanaticism is good when you’re in your teens, but quite a few of them have that,” said the five-time world champion on the Conversations with Tyler podcast. While talking specifically about Pragg and Gukesh, he went on to add: “I think maturity is maybe the most important thing because Pragg and Gukes...

GM Gukesh, 17, wins in Baku, to go past Viswanathan Anand as India’s top-ranked chess player

When FIDE, the global governing body of chess, publishes its monthly rating list at the end of this month, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will not be the top Indian in the published classical chess rankings for the first time in 36 years. Anand’s protege Gukesh D ensured he will end the month as the top-ranked Indian after his victory over Mistradin Iskandrov in the second round of the FIDE World Cup at Baku. The end-of-the-month ratings list will also see Gukesh break into the top 10 ranks for the first time, a lightning-quick rise for a teenager who only broke into the top 100 at the end of April 2022. Only two Indians before this have been in the top 10 — Pentala Harikrishna, who went ahead of Anand briefly in the live ratings in 2016 is the other Indian to have achieved t...
