Among dead: Motivational speaker called to address company employees, his son

On Friday, motivational speaker Kailash Jyani (62) was invited to deliver a lecture to the staff of a commercial unit in Mundka. His son, Amit Jyani (37), had accompanied him for the event. Later that evening, the father and son were killed in a fire at the building. Their bodies were among the eight identified on Saturday. “We were not aware of the fire. When our family members did not return, we tried calling them but the phones were switched off,” said Kailash’s nephew Bhupender. He said that when they contacted an acquaintance who had arranged the session, they were told of the fire. “My uncle and his son were missing. We tried checking with the police, but there was not much information. We checked at all hospitals too. We spent a sleepless night and again searched for them today m...

India’s Jehan Daruvala finishes second in sprint race in Imola

India’s Jehan Daruvala finished a creditable second in the sprint race of the Formula 2 championships here. The 23-year-old, who started third, rocketed off the line to slot into second behind Marcus Armstrong, who took the lead after sprint race pole-sitter Logan Sargeant made a tardy getaway and dropped to fifth on Saturday. Jehan kept the position through an early safety car and then a subsequent Virtual Safety Car period before unleashing his pace. Jehan, backed by Red Bull Racing, cranked up the pressure on Armstrong, harrying him for the lead as he closed to within a second of the Kiwi racer. But with overtaking proving to be tricky on the narrow Imola track, Jehan crossed the line 1.4 seconds behind the Hitech driver. Prema team-mate Dennis Hauger was third, completing a doub...

India to play warm-up games against Derbyshire, Northamptonshire ahead of England limited overs series

India will take on Derbyshire and Northamptonshire in two T20 warm-up fixtures ahead of their white-ball series against England in July. The two matches will be played against on July 1 and 3 respectively. However, both the games will clash with the postponed fifth and final Test between India and England, which was suspended due to a COVID-19 outbreak last year. The Test, which was called off after COVID-19 cases were reported in the Indian contingent, will be held from July 1-5 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. India lead the series 2-1. “India will travel to The Incora County Ground to face Derbyshire in a Twenty20 Tour Fixture on Friday 1 July (7pm start). The number-one ranked T20 side in the world will continue their ICC Twenty20 World Cup preparations against a Derbyshire s...

Plate put in Nari Contractor’s head after Griffith bouncer removed after 60 years

Former India batsman Nari Contractor suffered a head fracture after being hit by a Charlie Griffith bouncer on the 1962 tour of the Caribbean. Now, 60 years later, the metal plate inserted in the head through surgery has been removed at a Mumbai hospital on medical advice as Contractor was having pain. Contractor’s son Hoshedar told The Indian Express that his father was fine after surgery and should be home soon. “The operation was successful and he will be fine soon. He will be in hospital for a few more days and after doctor’s advice, we will take him home. We will take one step at a time. The skin was disintegrating on the plate. So he had lost the skin covering it, hence it was advised by the doctors to get it removed,” Hoshedar said. “Our family was a bit worried whic...

ICC Test Rankings: Ravindra Jadeja regains top spot among all-rounders

India’s Ravindra Jadeja reclaimed the top spot from West Indies’ Jason Holder in the latest ICC Test rankings for all-rounders released on Wednesday. Jadeja had risen to No. 1 after his 175 not out and nine wickets in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali earlier this month. However, he had lost the place to Holder last week. But the two players have once again interchanged places with Jadeja back on top with 385 rating points. Jadeja’s compatriot Ravichandran Ashwin held on to his third-place among all-rounders and continued to be second in the bowlers’ chart. Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who had jumped six spots last week, remained static on fourth in the bowling list. India skipper Rohit, the country’s top-ranked batter, fell a spot down to seventh in the l...

Despite showing the ability to attack, India lose 1-3 to Argentina in shoot-out

It’s tricky to read a lot into the Pro League results this season, given that almost all teams are in an experimental mode, but India coach Graham Reid must have a lot going on in his mind. His team isn’t able to hold possession in an assured manner, lack composure inside the attacking third, seem too one-dimensional in penalty corner situations, are often second to react to loose balls and, as a consequence of all these factors, aren’t able to get results they desire. Saturday’s 1-3 tie-breaker defeat to an under-strength Argentina, after the game ended 2-2 at the end of the regulation time, once again exposed these frailties, which are forming into a habit. For the first time in two years, India lost back-to-back matches at home, having been defeated by Spain earlier this...

IND vs SL 2nd Test 2022 Day 3 Highlights: India win by 238 runs, complete series sweep

Jasprit Bumrah celebrates with teammates after taking his fifth wicket of Sri Lanka's Niroshan Dickwella during the second day of the second Test in Bengaluru on Sunday. (AP/Aijaz Rahi) India vs Sri Lanka: Hosts turn the screw to assume total control Beyond a point, it seemed depressingly pointless. As if India’s only motivation to bat on was prolonging Sri Lanka’s agony. It was still the second day of the Test and India could have batted on for at least a couple more days had they wanted to, but were so far ahead in the match that batting on seemed meaningless in the context of the result. By the time India’s lead had crossed 350, at the stroke of the dinner break, propelled by Rishabh Pant’s 50, the visitors were already dead horses being flogged. Half an hour into the session, India...

IND vs SL 2nd Test 2022 Day 2 Live Score Updates: Jasprit Bumrah’s maiden fifer at home floor Sri Lanka

On squarest of square turners, Shreyas Iyer defangs Sri Lankan spinners on Day One of Pink-ball Test To the immeasurable silence of the stadium strode in Shreyas Iyer. The crowd favourite, Virat Kohli, had just perished to a shockingly low ball that had both him and the audience praying for his 71st hundred equally shocked. So silent that if you tuned your ears sharply, you could even hear the thud of Shreyas’s studs on the grass. But after 134 minutes of dazzling batting, after crunching 92 runs off 98 balls on a day no other batsman touched 40 on a bedevilled surface that spun, spat and shot and skidded, Shreyas returned to the pavilion to the deafening applause and light from swaying smartphones flickering like glow-worms. Watch: Mayank Agarwal’s bizarre run out in his first Test at home

It was not a happy homecoming for Mayank Agarwal was dismissed in bizarre fashion when he was run out during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on Saturday. In the fourth ball of the second over, Sri Lanka’s Vishwa Fernando’s ball appeared to have hit Mayank’s pad first. The Sri Lankans went up in a big appeal but the umpire did not seem convinced. Amidst the confusion, Mayank tried to sneak in a single without noticing that Praveen Jayawickrama had almost collected the ball. Rohit at the other end sent Mayank back but the right-hander had charged too far down the wicket. Jayawickrama lobbed it back towards Sri Lanka keeper Niroshan Dickwella with Mayank having no chance to return to the crease on time. Mayank Agarwal wicket #INDvSL pic.twitter.com/P...

Shafali Verma will come good soon; hitting well in nets: Jhulan Goswami

Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami on Wednesday backed teen batting sensation Shafali Verma to overcome her poor form in the ongoing ICC women’s World Cup sooner than later, saying that the swashbuckler is hitting the ball quite well during net sessions. Verma was dismissed for a duck in the opening game against Pakistan that Indian won and hasn’t exactly done well for the past few games. The 18-year-old’s form is expected to be crucial to the team’s chances of landing a first ever ICC title. “Shafali has already proved herself. She is a very exciting cricketer. But these things happen with every cricketer,” Goswami said in a virtual press conference ahead of the game against New Zealand here on Thursday. “I am sure she is working hard really well in the nets, she is ba...

Moments later, a slightly fuller one zipped through again and sent off stump for a walk. It seemed to take an eternity for the stumps to be put in place. Finally Siraj bustled in once more and bowled a perfectly acceptable good length ball. Kohli’s front foot sprung into action and the cover drive slammed into the side of the net. Sri Lanka pulled things back with two wickets in four overs. The match in Mohali also marks Sri Lanka’s 300th test. Rout map to a world record

India equalled the world record for most consecutive T20I wins with their 12th successive victory as they defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third and final match in Dharamsala to make it a hattrick of 3-0 sweeps at home. They are now tied with Afghanistan and Romania, and only the latter’s streak is ongoing. Shreyas Iyer’s form remained the standout of the series as he took charge of Sunday’s chase of 147, just like he had on Saturday. He ended the three-match contest with three half-centuries – 57 off 28, 74 off 44 and 73 off 45, all unbeaten knocks at a cumulative strike-rate of 174 as against a career T20 strike-rate of 130. India steamroll Sri Lanka to seal series

The tourists will rue poor captaincy from Dasun Shanaka, his 19-ball 47 not out notwithstanding, that allowed Iyer to grow into the game. A more proactive approach and the Indian batsman probably wouldn’t have lasted that long to inflict hurt on the Islanders. Sri Lanka had racked up 80 runs in their last five overs to give themselves a very good chance in cold Dharamsala, in conditi...

Rohit Sharma trusts me lot, I have got the freedom to do whatever I want to: Bumrah tells Ashwin

Rohit Sharma’s trusted lieutenant Jasprit Bumrah says the India skipper has always had unflinching faith in his ability, backing him to bowl the most important overs even when he was new at Mumbai Indians, and now gives him the freedom to do things his way. If Bumrah is to be believed, then Rohit has played a crucial role in his development as one of the world’s premier fast bowlers. “When I came into the side Ricky (Ponting) was the captain and I was not playing regularly. I started playing a lot under Rohit, he had a lot of confidence in me. He instilled a lot of confidence,” Bumrah said during a conversation with India team-mate Ravichandran Ashwin on the senior off-spinner’s ‘DRS With Ash’ episode on his YouTube channel. “He (Rohit) saw me bowling at nets, he saw wh...

IND vs SL 2nd T20I Predicted Playing XI: Ravi Bishnoi likely to replace Yuzvendra Chahal?

India vs Sri Lanka T20I Predicted Playing XI: It is still early days but the Rohit Sharma-led side has already figured out the core group of players that will travel to Australia for the World Cup Down Under later this year. Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi might get a look in place of senior pro Yuzvendra Chahal, while Avesh Khan is likely to find a spot in the playing eleven. Young opener Ishan Kishan got a massive dose of confidence in the series opener on Thursday after his struggles against the West Indies. Shreyas Iyer made merry at number three in the absence of the rested Virat Kohli and would be aiming to repeat that for the rest of the series. When a full-strength India take the field next, he might not find a place in the playing eleven and therefore, he needs to make the m...

BCCI committee to probe journalist’s threat to Wriddhiman Saha

The BCCI has formed a three-member committee to probe into the allegation of Wriddhiman Saha receiving threats from a journalist, who purportedly sent him a string of WhatsApp messages, demanding an interview. The cricket board’s vice-president Rajiv Shukla, treasurer Arun Dhumal and the BCCI Apex Council member Prabhtej Singh Bhatia constitute the committee that will start the inquiry proceedings early next week. This comes on a day when Saha dropped a hint that he might be open to revealing the name of the journalist, although for the “time being” he is maintaining secrecy. This paper had earlier reported that the BCCI would ask Saha to reveal the identity of the journalist. “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has today constituted a three-member committ...

IND vs WI 3rd T20I Playing XI: Shreyas, Ruturaj and Avesh in fray for today’s match?

India vs West Indies T20 Playing XI: With the series already in their bag, India will have the liberty to experiment in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday. With Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant given a 10-day break, the home team is set to finally include the gifted Shreyas Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the playing XI. In the absence of KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan has failed to impress at the top of the order and his place could be given to the talented Gaikwad, who has been warming the bench until now. In the middle-order, Shreyas will replace Kohli, who has been given a much-needed break ahead of his landmark 100th Test. Shreyas, who was the third biggest buy at the IPL auction but could not fit into India’s T20 combination for the first two matche...
