Hammered by the hosts inside three days in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, Australia fought back strongly to claim the third match on an Indore pitch that offered vicious turn and variable bounce. "You have almost got to be near perfect against India in India. I think this game (Indore Test) besides that 6 for 11 was near perfect," McDonald was quoted as saying 'ESPNcricinfo'....

Watch: Fans chant for Rishabh Pant as India suffer another batting collapse against Australia in 3rd Test

[ad_1] As India suffered another batting collapse on Thursday against Australia in the 3rd Test at Indore, a section of fans in the stands started a chant for Rishabh Pant. Watch: Steve Smith takes a stunner to end Cheteshwar Pujara’s resistance in IND vs AUS 3rd Test

[ad_1] Australia stand-in captain Steve Smith pulled off a catch of the series contender when his one handed grab at slips ended Cheteshwar Pujara’s stay at the crease in the 3rd Test at Indore on Thursday. The catch proved to be the turning point of the match as Pujara, who was batting at 59, slowly and steadily waged a lone battle to rebuild the Indian innings after the rest of the top order had crumbled. In the 57th over, Nathan Lyon’s 3rd ball had spun inside and Pujara tried to play a drive but did not get as much bat to it as he would have liked. Smith, who was situated at the leg slip dived low and took an absolute stunning catch with his outstretched hand. Could this be a match-turning catch by @stevesmith49 to dismiss @cheteshwar1 for a determined 59 #INDvAUS #classic pic.twitt...

Also seen is Nathan Lyon (2L) who took 3 wickets. | Photo Credit: Moorthy R V Cricketing tales often hang on slender threads. Journeying to India, Matthew Kuhnemann was not the first-choice left-arm spinner for Australia. That position went to Ashton Agar who was considered the second spinner in the Australian team behind Nathan Lyon. How things changed! The 26-year-old Kuhnemann, with just over 30 First Class wickets, leapfrogged over Agar in Australia’s practice sessions. The think-tank too felt Kuhnemman’s quicker variety of left-arm spin was better suited to these wickets. ...

IND vs AUS: Why did the Indore pitch offer wicked turn and variable bounce on the morning of Day 1?

[ad_1] The pitch which was a mix of red and black is not new to Indian players. But prior to the Test, as has been the case throughout the series, there was selective watering. Though it’s a common practice, what made it so hard for Indian batsmen was the fact that the moisture content – black soil tends to absorb more of it, which made it a bit damp. So whenever the ball landed in those parts – which had a bit of grass cover – it kept low. And whenever the ball landed in the dry area – mostly red soil – it found a sharp turn and bounce. Selective watering is a regular feature in Indian pitches but works better if the pitch isn’t a mixed-soil in nature. Black and red soils are contrasting as it is, offering different bounce but the selective watering meant it was even more of a contrast...
