Statehood in haste, Goa should be UT like J&K: ex-CM

Former Goa Chief Minister and Congress MLA Ravi Naik on Wednesday said that Goa got its statehood in haste, and that it should be made a Union Territory — like Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Goa should get grant from the Centre to enhance its revenue and become a self-reliant state. Leader of Opposition in Assembly and senior Congress leader Digambar Kamat, however, said Naik’s statement was his own and not that of the party. “The Chief Minister must make efforts to obtain a grant for the state to be self-sufficient. We got statehood in a haste…. When we were a UT, we were getting all grants and there was development. People should think about this…how it was done in Kashmir. The state government and the Central government should think about it,” Naik told the media. G...

Video | Row Over Construction of Wall at Goa’s Vainguinim Beach

The construction of a wall along north Goa's Vainguinim beach by the promoters of a nearby five-star resort has sparked a huge controversy. Activists and civil society groups have called the wall "illegal", even as the hospitality group, Fomento Resorts and Hotels Limited, has maintained that the wall is being built in its own property and with permission from the state government's Water Resources department. The other issue is the work is going on during the lockdown and even at night raising more questions about the activity. Source link

On the night of May 11, 21 people died, on the night of May 12, 15 people died, and last night, 13 people died.” He said the deaths had again happened during “the dark hours” at GMCH — 2 am to 6 am, when the hospital has been seeing oxygen supply fluctuations.GMCH PRO Dr Mahesh Kambli said that while 13 peo...

Citing ecosystem, Supreme Court panel red-flags Goa rail project; for tweaks in power, road plans

RAISING SERIOUS environmental concerns, the Supreme Court’s Central Empowerment Committee (CEC) has red-flagged a key rail expansion push in Goa and recommended crucial changes to two other proposed projects — a highway and a power transmission line — in the state. These projects had been cleared by the Centre last year despite concerns being raised at various levels since they would cut through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary (BMWS) and the Mollem National Park (MNP) in South Goa. In its report dated April 23, the CEC said that it does not find any justification in doubling the railway track from Castle Rock in Karnataka to Kulem in Goa as it “will destroy the fragile eco-system of the Western Ghats which is an internationally recognised Biodiversity hotspot and al...
