Meet Hugo Calderano, the Brazilian vegetarian table tennis star who speaks seven languages and can solve a Rubik’s Cube in nine seconds

He speaks seven languages, can solve a Rubik’s Cube in nine seconds on average, and can name the capital of every country.Brazilian 27-year-old Hugo Calderano may be a mental wizard now but at the age of 13, he had to make a potentially life-altering decision. With his parents being physical education teachers, he was into various sports but excelled at two – volleyball and table tennis. They backed him to become a professional athlete, but asked him to pick one sport and focus on it. Being Brazilian, they perhaps thought he would pick volleyball, the country’s second-most popular sport after football. After all, he had participated in regular competitions and was even drafted into the state team while on the other hand, there weren’t too many top Brazilian star paddlers he could look u...

Xabi Alonso-powered Leverkusen pose a serious threat to giants Bayern

“He has the quality that a ‘metronome’ must have. I’m sure that when he hangs up his boots, he’ll be a great coach if he wants to be. He reminds me of Pep Guardiola when I had him as a player.” One of European football’s most decorated managers, Jose Mourinho saw Xabi Alonso’s potential as a manager even while he was a player under him. It’s been fourteen years since Mourinho made that bold prediction. And the Spanish midfielder, who is at the helm of Bayer Leverkusen, is proving the “Special One’s” analysis to be prophetic. In a league with giants like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Alonso’s club currently sits pretty right at the top with a 4-point difference with second-placed Bayern. Leverkusen have played 17 matches this season so far with an unbeaten record – 14 wins and 3 d...

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich defeat to RB Leipzig hands Borussia Dortmund chance to claim title; Hertha Berlin relegated

Bayern Munich squandered its lead on Saturday as Leipzig came from behind to win 3-1 in the Bundesliga, giving Borussia Dortmund the chance to move top going into the final weekend. Bayern just needed to win its last two games to be sure of claiming its record-extending 11th consecutive title, but Leipzig’s shock win in Munich handed Dortmund the initiative. Dortmund faces Augsburg away on Sunday. If it wins that game, and its final game at home to Mainz next weekend, Dortmund would end Bayern’s 10-year reign as German champion. It had started so well for the Bavarian powerhouse, which dominated the opening half hour against the cautious visitors. Thomas Müller – making his second consecutive start for Bayern – set up Serge Gnabry for the opener in the 25th minute. But Leipzig responded...

League leaders Bayern Munich slumped to a 3-1 loss at Mainz 05 on Saturday, conceding all three goals in a span of 14 minutes in their latest slip-up which could prove costly in the race for the Bundesliga title with five games remaining. The Bavarians, eliminated by Manchester City in the Champions League last eight on Wednesday, could not have imagined a worst afternoon after going 1-0 up courtesy of Sadio Mane’s 29th minute header at the far post. Bayern, chasing an 11th straight league crown, are on 59 points and second-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 57, can take over the lead with a win over Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday. Despite having more than 70% of possession for more than an hour, Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, who have now won just two of their last seven matches under the fo...

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich hires Thomas Tuchel to replace Julian Nagelsmann as coach

Bayern Munich hired Thomas Tuchel as coach on Friday to replace Julian Nagelsmann after losing the lead of the Bundesliga. Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn blamed “big fluctuations in performance” and said the squad wasn’t showing its true potential under Nagelsmann. Tuchel will take over training from Monday with a contract until the end of the 2024-25 season. The decision came after the team lost at Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday. Bayern’s domestic league form over the last two months has been mixed, but the removal of Nagelsmann was widely seen as a surprise, especially following an assured win over Paris Saint-Germain this month to reach the Champions League quarterfinals. In a sign of loyalty to Nagelsmann within the squad, midfielder Joshua Kimmich praised him ...
