French Open: How Lakshya Sen battled back superbly to defeat world No 4 for a timely confidence boost in Race to Paris

Going through a rough phase recently, Lakshya Sen suffered yet another first-round exit at the start of the year when he lost to Priyanshu Rajawat at home in the Delhi Open. The message then from his long-time coach Vimal Kumar was simple: ‘Just because you lost some first-round matches recently, doesn’t mean you are a bad player.’ The team around Lakshya believed that the results didn’t necessarily match the work he was putting in. Some of his defeats last year could have been put down to not being in physically good shape but the Delhi Open defeat wasn’t down to that. He evidently has been clocking some of the best fitness numbers he has. But for all that to bear fruit, Lakshya needed a result of significance on the World Tour. Forget qualification for the Olympics, just for his confi...

Defending champion Casper Ruud ousted by Nicolas Jarry in Geneva Open quarterfinals

Casper Ruud’s run at a third straight Geneva Open title ended in a 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 loss to Nicolás Jarry in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The top-seeded Ruud had his serve broken at 5-5 in the third set after the 54th-ranked Chilean fired two powerful forehand winners. Jarry’s serve held up after wasting an earlier break that forced a 4-3 lead, and took his second match-point chance with an overhead smash winner. Ruud now heads early to the French Open where he is seeded No. 4 when play starts Sunday. The 24-year-old Norwegian won the warm-up event at Geneva in 2021 and last year, when he also reached the final at Roland Garros losing to Rafael Nadal. Jarry earned a rematch in the semifinals on Friday of the 2019 final at Geneva he lost to Alexander Zverev. Zverev had an easy passage...

Daniil Medvedev makes his mark on clay by beating Rune for Italian Open title

Daniil Medvedev hadn’t won a single match in his three previous appearances at the Italian Open. Now he’s won the tournament. The Russian beat rising 20-year-old Danish player Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5 on Sunday for the first clay-court trophy of a career that includes the 2021 U.S. Open title and a period at No. 1 in the rankings. Medvedev was previously known almost exclusively for his prowess on hard courts, with 18 of his previous 19 titles coming on that surface — the other was on grass in Mallorca. But he now must be considered a contender at the French Open — the clay-court Grand Slam — which starts next Sunday.
