This day, 40 years ago: ’Bloody hell! It’s your 29th!’ When Sunil Gavaskar equalled Don Bradman’s 29th hundred in Delhi

Forty years to the day, on October 29 1983, Sunil Gavaskar entered the folklore for equalling Don Bradman’s 29th hundred. Not just the record-equalling feat but the manner of his hundred, brutally walloping the pacy West Indies bowlers made everyone gasp. Such were his powers of concentration that he didn’t even realise he had reached the landmark. In his mind, he had thought he had entered the 80’s. “I thought I had gone to 82 from 78,” Gavaskar would say then. It was left to the non-striker Dilip Vengsarkar to yell out, “Bloody hell, it’s your 29th!”. The moment is immortalised in YouTube. Gavaskar shuffles across to stylishly whip a full ball from Malcolm Marshall through wide mid-on and has just turned for the second run when the ball whooshed past the boundary. Time to unwind: Broad with his partner Mollie King and daughter after the fifth Ashes Test. | Photo Credit: Getty Images Retirements in sport are tricky affairs. Sir Don Bradman was dismissed for a duck, Javed Miandad got run-out and many great players slipped at the last hurdle. To perform and equally contribute to a team victory is the stuff of dreams and Stuart Broad precisely did that at the Oval under the London skies on Monday. Helping England level the Ashes at 2-2 against the ‘old enemy’ Australia was a f...

Choosing all-time teams: why Bradman may always not make it

Does cricket above all sports lend itself most often to such mental exercises as “the greatest Indian team of all time” or, to go one step higher, “the greatest-ever team of all time?” Even Don Bradman — who is in everybody’s all-time team — couldn’t resist the temptation. In The Art of Cricket he talked about ideal elevens and such things as teams with players’ names beginning with the letter ‘H’ (Hobbs, Hutton, Hammond etc) and other combinations. That book was published in 1958. In 2001, Bradman’s Best, a book about his all-time team caused as much interest as heartburn. Bradman saw his first Test aged 12; it was an Ashes contest (Australia v England) at Sydney in 1920-21. Bradman thus had an intimate knowledge of 20th century cricket (he died in Feb 2001 aged 92), apart from being d...
