The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj said Sunday they arrested eight men for allegedly gang raping a 16-year-old girl while she was sitting in a field near a canal with her fiancé. According to the Kasganj police, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against 10 men under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections of gang-rape, extortion, and criminal intimidation. “A woman was sitting with her fiance at a canal in the field when some people on finding them alone raped her. They also snatched some money from her fiancé,” said Ankita Sharma, Superintendent of Police, Kasganj. Observing that “refusal to investigate will allow perpetrators to go unpunished,” the Bombay High Court on Monday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Mumbai police to probe the custodial death of an accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case. A 23-year-old janitor, arrested in August 2024 for the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district, was shot dead while he was being transported in a police vehicle on September 23. The SIT will be supervised by Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Lakhmi Gautam and headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.
