Mohammed Shami: Can’t doubt this Indian team after results in last 4-6 years

India’s player of the match against New Zealand in the second ODI felt like the team’s performance in recent times hasn’t warranted the scepticism that has followed the team in a World Cup year. In the aftermath of a thumping eight-wicket win over the visitors on Saturday in Raipur, Mohammed Shami responded to being asked whether the Indian team is sure of its first choice XI for the upcoming World Cup. “If people still doubt the Indian team despite the results it has given in the last four to six years…,” Shami retorted. “The World Cup is still a long time away; we need to play a lot of games and need to try out more players before that.” Shami’s comments came following India’s seventh successive ODI series win at home, a run maintained since the 2-3 loss to Australia ahead of the 2019...

Getting more opportunities to bat in last one year has helped my power game: Santner

New Zealand left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner feels getting more opportunities to bat over the past 12 months has led to an improvement in his power game and helped him chip in with useful knocks. Santner smashed his third ODI fifty on Wednesday while supporting a rampaging Michael Bracewell in a whirlwind 162-run stand for the seventh wicket against India, taking New Zealand very close to the finishing line in Hyderebad. Batting at number eight, his game plan is simple – to hit sixes from ball one – and that was amply clear in the way he batted in the centre nets of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium on Friday. Like the rest of the New Zealand batters, he mostly faced the spinners and tried to hit most balls out of the park. “Being an all-rounder you need to chip in both the department...

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s bizarre dismissal in the first ODI against New Zealand led to an avoidable on-field moment between the two teams here on Wednesday. Hardik (28) was adjudged bowled in a rather questionable call from third umpire K N Anantha Padmanabhan. After he missed a cut shot completely off medium pacer Daryl Mitchell, the bails came off and New Zealand appealed for a bowled dismissal. Shubman Gill’s father wasn’t happy with the century against Sri Lanka: Gurkeerat Mann. ‘When will he learn … he isn’t going to get these starts all the time’

Right from his U-14 days, Shubman Gill’s father, Lakhwinder, an ardent cricket fan, would get upset whenever he threw away his starts. When the entire country was celebrating Gill’s famous 91 at Gabba, Gill Sr was rueing the fact that why all of a sudden his son “played away from his body” against Nathan Lyon. When Shubman scored his first century in India at Thiruvananthapuram against Sri Lanka, Lakhwinder again was very upset after he got out on 116. “You see how he is getting out, even after he scored a century, he had enough time to score a double century. He will not get these starts all the time. When will he learn?” Gurkeerat Mann narrates the lament he heard from Shubman’s father at his residence on Sunday. ICYMI – 𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏. 𝘼. In passing away of Kaptaan Ji Radheyshyam Sharma, Delhi cricket loses another pillar

In the passing away of Subhania Cricket Club’s founder-cum-coach Radheysham Sharma another pillar of the Capital’s cricket coaching has fallen. Radheyshyam, who was 90, passed away in Delhi on Wednesday morning. During the 1960s to 2000, Delhi cricket was dominated by players from clubs, notably Sonnet, Subhania, R R Gymkhana and National Stadium Sports Centre. With Sonnet’s founder and coach Tarak Sinha having left this world a couple of years ago, Radheyshyam’s death has come as a big blow to the Capital’s cricket, which is already struggling to match its performances of the 1970s and ’80s. Subhania had the rare distinction of some of the greats of Indian cricket of those days having represented it in some local tournaments in the 1960s and ’70s. Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan celebrates after scoring a century against Delhi on the first day of the Ranji Match at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium on January 17, 2023. | Photo Credit: R.V. Moorthy Sitting atop a pile of runs, Sarfaraz Khan was a shattered man after failing to break into the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against Australia. Not one to give up, the Mumbai run-machine sent the national selectors yet another reminder on Tuesday, notching up his third century in the ongoing edition of Ranji Trophy to extend his astonishing run in the Indian domestic circuit. That Mumbai could make 293 before being bowled out on the first day of their Group B match against traditional rivals Delhi, was largely due to the 25-year-old's 125 off 155 balls at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Pace of deliveries is little slower in U-19 cricket: Shafali Verma

With 74 senior international appearances under her belt, Shafali Verma is finding the pace of U-19 bowlers in the ongoing junior Women’s World Cup, slightly easier to face. Shafali, who has already played 51 WT20Is and 21 WODIs besides two Tests for India senior team, is currently leading the U-19 national side in the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. She has already stamped her class with 16-ball-45 against South Africa and 34-ball-78 against UAE in consecutive win for the Indian girls. “There is lot of difference because the ball is coming in little slow in the U-19 and the wicket is also in the slower side and we are trying to get used to that. And of course, a little bit of difference, seamers have good pace, a good mind-set here also but they are all learning and I really enjoying playin...

Ishan Kishan is strong contender for Test spot in Pant’s absence: Mohammad Azharuddin

Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin believes Ishan Kishan would be a strong option as a wicket-keeper batter in the absence of Rishabh Pant for next month’s four-match Test series against Australia. Ishan was handed a maiden call-up in India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar trophy beginning at Nagpur on February 9. Azhar, who is doing commentary in the International League T20 in UAE, said what happened to Pant is very unfortunate but Ishan’s aggressive style of batting makes him a strong contender for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot. Pant was severely injured in a car accident in the last week of December while he was travelling from Delhi to Roorkee. He will be sidelined for most of the 2023 season as he recovers from multiple injuries. “Ishan Kishan has been selected in the ...

Star Sports is the official broadcaster of Indian Premier League as well as Indian national team's home games along with all ICC events. ‘Potentially last minute that was a change of mind’: Zampa on being told he had a ‘very good chance’ of featuring in the Australia squad for India Tests

Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa wasn’t added to Australia’s 18-player squad for the India Test series in February-March. The 30-year-old however, felt like his recent white ball cricket outings for Australia were in favor of him to be one of the four spinners the Pat Cummins-led lineup has added.  “I’m very disappointed. I would have loved to have been on it,” Zampa was quoted by cricket.com.au. “Don’t know what’s next for me now, it’s two-and-a-half years until the next subcontinent tour. I thought with the way I’ve been going in international in particular that this was going to be my opportunity.” An 18-player Test squad has been assembled for the Qantas Tour of India in February and March.
