IBA Ordinary Congress: ‘Olympics need boxing’, says Kremlev; USA, Switzerland return to fold

Reintegration of different federations from the United States and Switzerland; termination of the membership of German and Dutch federations; and an unequivocal stance hitting out against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – these were the key takeaways from the Ordinary Congress of the International Boxing Association (IBA) held in Dubai on Saturday, which took place in the background of one of the most turbulent years in amateur boxing history. For the first time in its 129-year history, the IOC kicked out a sports governing body from the Olympic family when it expelled the IBA in June after a four-year-long dispute over alleged financial instability, poor governance, and corruption in refereeing decisions. In the aftermath, the IBA did not take charge of hosting the boxing even...

Asian Games: No boxing seedings means Nikhat Zareen & other Indian boxers face tough tests early on

Nikhat Zareen, the reigning 51kg women’s world champion, will face the Vietnamese boxer she defeated in the finals of the 2023 Women’s World Championships in New Delhi in her first round itself No seeding for the boxing programme at the Hangzhou Asian Games means that many of the Worlds best boxers might not need to wait till the final to meet each other. A field that isn’t balanced by seedings has meant that in certain scenarios, top boxers face each other early in the tournament while in other scenarios, unheralded prospects get an easy pathway to the top. No scenario exemplifies this better than Nikhat Zareen, the reigning 51kg women’s boxing world champion, who will face the Vietnamese boxer she defeated in the finals of the 2023 Women’s World Championships in New Delhi in her first...

Sports court rejects IBA appeal to reverse stripping of its recognition; IOC condemns leadership language

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has failed to reverse the stripping of its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday rejecting its urgent appeal. The CAS decision comes after the IOC decided two weeks ago to strip the IBA of its recognition as the official international body for the sport over its failure to meet reform criteria. On Tuesday the IOC Executive Board also objected to comments made by the IBA leadership at a regional meeting in Brazil. “The President of the Appeals Arbitration Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has today dismissed the IBA’s urgent request,” CAS said. The IOC had suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance, finance, refereeing and ethical issues and did not in...

Hussamuddin withdraws, Deepak Bhoria and Nishant Dev suffer close defeats in Boxing Worlds semis

Three Indian men had already made history by reaching the semi-finals of the IBA Boxing World Championships, making it the best-ever haul for the country at a single Worlds event. But on the day they could have punched their ticket to the finals, varying strokes of bad luck hit them to end India’s campaign in Tashkent on Friday. A day started off on a sour note as the Boxing Federation of India announced that Mohammad Hussamuddin would have to give a walkover to Cuba’s Saidel Horta. The reason provided was a knee injury that the Nizamabad boxer had picked up in the quarter-finals. With a medal assured, and a host of tournaments like the Asian Games on the horizon, the decision was made to not aggravate the injury. The other Indians in the fray were Deepak Bhoria (51 kg flyweight categor...

Lack of elite level competition shows in Russian boxers’ poor performance

For a year, Russian women’s team coach Albert Mutalibov went to his coterie of World Champion boxers and like an elder with no plan of how or when things would get better, but just a comforting lie in his pocket, assured them that things would indeed be fine soon. He promised them that they would all be back on the world stage and would soon be competing in international competitions once again. It was the only thing keeping the Russian women’s boxing team and their staff going. At these Women’s Boxing World Championships in New Delhi, those comforting words sat true, but the return has come at some cost. Russia was one of the select nations in the competition that sent a full-strength twelve-woman squad to New Delhi. But what has happened since then has been something that Mutalibov fe...
