BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato wrote to the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice on Saturday requesting the court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged police brutality during the teachers’ protest in front of Bikas Bhavan in Kolkata on Thursday. Mahato’s letter highlighted “excessive use of force by the police, resulting in severe injuries to numerous teachers, as well as police inaction during attacks on the protesters by certain Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders” amid the protest. 8 arrested for raping a 16-year-old girl in UP’s Kasganj, 2 absconding

The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj said Sunday they arrested eight men for allegedly gang raping a 16-year-old girl while she was sitting in a field near a canal with her fiancé. According to the Kasganj police, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against 10 men under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections of gang-rape, extortion, and criminal intimidation. “A woman was sitting with her fiance at a canal in the field when some people on finding them alone raped her.
