“I think it’s a mistake, particularly in Manchester where the ball does turn

Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh slammed Australia for dropping Todd Murphy from the playing eleven for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.“I tend to disagree with it,” Waugh told SENQ Breakfast of the Australian selection. Australia went into the game with an all out pace attack. “I think it’s a mistake, particularly in Manchester where the ball does turn,” observed Waugh. “I know they’re probably looking at the forecast and saying there’s a bit of rain around, but you do need variation in the attack,” Waugh added. Cameron Green missed the last Test at Headingley. Mitchell Marsh came into the side in place of him in the all-rounder slot. He had a brilliant outing. England’s exhilarating run chase to battle back into the Ashes series was even too much for captain Ben Stokes, despite the captain being the source of many a dramatic innings. Supporters headed to Headingley on day four with England needing 224 runs in the must-win test to stop Australia retaining the Ashes with two matches to spare, with Stokes very much in mind as their go-to hero. On the ground where Stokes’ incredible 135 not out steered England to victory over their old foes in the 2019 series, the skipper managed just 13 and had to watch on from the pavilion. Not that he could bring himself to, as Chris Woakes hit the winning runs to seal a pulsating three-wicket win to leave the series finely-poised at 2-1 to Australia. “I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous at the end,” Sto...

Ashes: In gritty conditions at Leeds, Australia keep their Head against England

Under the sullen, sombre skies of Leeds, Travis Head composed another cameo of gritty violence to keep the game in the balance. The conditions on a rain-curtailed day were incredibly difficult to bat, the surface under incessant pounding for most of the day, the ball, though old, hooping and hemming around at the velvet fingers of Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad, but Head has made a happy habit of shining amidst the gloom. His counter-blows, in a characteristic 76, ensured that Australia set a target of 251, of which England whittled down 27 runs without the loss of any wicket with characteristic gusto; whether its daunting or not would depend on the overhead conditions on Sunday. Stumps. The perfect day for England? 😍 We need a further 2️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ to win with 🔟 wickets remaining. #Engla...

How England vs Australia has been reduced to a Pat Cummins vs Ben Stokes battle

The captain and his deputy, joined soon by their teammates, celebrated ecstatically at the departure of the prickliest thorn in their flesh this Ashes. But Cummins still had the dignity to applaud his counterpart, and Stokes reciprocated with a warm nod. At stumps on Day 2, the match was an even keel. England were 116/4 after Australia had got a 142 runs lead. This truly has been a series of the two captains, two giants of the game trying to outplay each other, like two masterful Grandmasters at the either end of board, pouring every ounce of their wit and will to wrestle advantage to define the series. On Friday, Stokes stroked an 80 of utter vi...

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon believes the ‘Bazball’ style of play only works if the opposition panics and has urged his team mates to remain calm in the face of England’s aggressive batting in the upcoming Ashes series. England have won 10 of their last 12 Tests since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon ‘Baz’ McCullum took over and introduced the high-risk, high-reward style of play. “You look at the way they played against New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan, they have been able to force the opposition into panicking,” Lyon told Australian Associated Press (AAP). “We just have to worry about us. Control what we can control and worry about what is in our backyard and not be worried about what they’re doing. “If we make sure we have really good plans and stick to them, everythin...
