The approach to regulating AI in India

The governance and regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have garnered significant global attention over the past year. While the discourse has recently shifted from a focus on social safety, inclusivity, and human rights towards prioritising innovation and economic prosperity, only a few countries or regions have so far introduced laws to regulate AI. These include China, the European Union, Canada, Korea, Peru, and the U.S. (though U.S. President Donald Trump has now revoked former President Joe Biden’s Executive Order related to the utilisation of AI). Those who embrace its tide will soar to new professional heights, while those who resist will inevitably be left behind.A recent report by Bain & Company paints a compelling picture of AI’s meteoric rise in the job market, forecasting over 2.3 million AI-related openings in India alone by 2027. Yet, lurking behind this silver lining is a sobering reality—India lacks the skilled workforce to meet this surging demand, leaving a gaping chasm of over a million unfilled roles. While some professionals fear AI wil...

The issue pits sovereignty and national pride against financial constraints. Is it necessary for sovereignty and business reasons for India to work towards a foundational model, as the IT Ministry’s IndiaAI Mission has announced it will? Pranesh Prakash and Tanuj Bhojwani discuss the question in a discussion moderated by Aroon Deep. Edited excerpts: Does India need to build a sovereign foundational AI model for its local needs?Pranesh Prakash: I believe that India should be working on foundation models, but not for the purpose of sovereignty.
