Why boxer Amit Panghal is in no mood to celebrate latest gold medal at Strandja Memorial

There wasn’t any jumping in the air or even a hint of a smile when the referee raised his hand. When a glum Amit Panghal won the gold medal at the Strandja Memorial, he had done what had to be done – an act that he has been monotonously carrying out since the Commonwealth Games.Gone was the confidence and swagger of a man who had become the first Indian male boxer to win a silver medal at the World Championships. This Panghal was more like the one at the Tokyo Olympics, left crumpled in a heap after a shock defeat despite being the top seed in his weight class. Since that crushing loss, he has only been part of one major event – the 2022 Birmingham CWG. Two World Championships and an Asian Games have since passed and the boxer has found himself sliding down the pecking order in relation...

Strandja Memorial boxing: Nikhat Zareen goes down in close bout; Amit Panghal, Sachin clinch gold

For a brief moment at the end of the women’s 50kg final, there was confusion. The announcer read out that the boxer in blue had won, but the referee lifted the arm of the boxer in red. But Nikhat Zareen knew by then that it wasn’t her day. She had a wry smile as the referee quickly changed the decision to point to the right winner ass per the judges. It was a silver for the two-time world champion at the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria on Sunday as Nikhat (50kg) went down 2-3 against Uzbekistan’s Sabina Bobokulova. On another day, the decision to raise Nikhat’s hand could well have been the right one because there wasn’t much to choose between the two. Halfway into the opening round, Bobokulova threw both her arms up in the air as if celebrating a good punch on the...

In boxing, it is often tough to go up against athletes from home country, especially closer to the business end of an event. But when you are as skillful as Nikhat Zareen, it makes life easier. She conquered her Bulgarian opponent in a measured display of attacking boxing to reach the final at the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia on Saturday, leading the way as five other Indians followed suit. The two-time world champion was taking her time at the start against Zlatislava Chukanova, with the home fans in good voice. But the Indian contingent, sat in a group behind the ring, made their voices heard too. The little things matter, and they cheered on every punch that Nikhat landed, letting the judges know she was in control. The opening round was tough, going 3-2 in favour of th...
