The Mumbai police, who recently filed a chargesheet in the Saif Ali Khan attack case, have found that the accused, Bangladeshi national Mohammed Shariful Islam Fakir, allegedly committed thefts in West Bengal.
As per the Bandra police’s chargesheet, Fakir’s 52-year-old maternal uncle from the South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal told the police in his statement that in July 2024, Fakir came to his house and stayed there for a day. But as he stole money from his house, he threw Fakir out of his house and family, the man allegedly told the police.
This relative informed the police that Fakir was a Bangladeshi national and also gave details of his family living in the neighbouring country.
Tracing the owner of the mobile phone Fakir was using led the Bandra police to a 32-year-old woman from Nadiya district of West Bengal who allegedly told them that her new phone had been stolen from outside Kolkata Medical College when she had gone there to meet her sister’s husband, who was admitted there after suffering a heart attack.
The woman allegedly told the police that she used a friend’s phone and made several video calls to her own number and spoke to Fakir, requesting him to return her phone. He allegedly told her that he could not do so as he was in Mumbai. The person never revealed his name but admitted that he was a Bangladeshi, the woman told the police, as per the chargesheet.
According to the police, she identified Fakir as the thief when the police showed his photo to her on the mobile phone. She allegedly told the police that as she was illiterate, she did not file a complaint, the chargesheet says.
