West Bengal is set to experience a period of fluctuating weather conditions in the coming days, with the IMD forecasting a mix of heatwaves, thunderstorms, and rainfall. While some regions may find temporary relief from the heat, the humidity is expected to exacerbate discomfort.
According to the forecast for April to June, a slightly above normal number of heatwave days are likely to occur over some parts of south Bengal, especially in April itself.
However, this heat is expected to be interspersed with stormy weather. “The IMD has forecast that several districts of South Bengal may experience storms and rains in the next few days,” officials said. “Humidity-related discomfort is likely to increase further as the water vapour content in the air is between 47 and 90 percent,” one of them said. “Light thunderstorms and rain are likely in the coastal and western districts of South Bengal. The sky is likely to remain cloudy at places. There is a possibility of rain with thunderstorms in Purulia, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram and Paschim Bardhaman,” they said.
The coastal and eastern districts are likely to witness increased rainfall on Sunday and Monday. “Thunderstorms are forecast in almost all districts of the state, including Kolkata, on Tuesday,” added an official.
Meanwhile, North Bengal is also expected to experience varying weather patterns. “There is a possibility of rain in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal on Friday. Thunderstorms with lightning are also likely in other districts of North Bengal, including Malda ,from Sunday onwards,” said officials.
In Kolkata, the maximum temperature remains close to normal. “The city’s minimum temperature on Thursday was 26.3 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was 34.4 degrees Celsius,” an official said.
