Mumbai police have booked a Thane police constable on Wednesday on charges of abetment of suicide after the constable’s female friend died last month.
The 23-year-old woman, before dying by suicide, made a video in which she narrated how the accused, Samay Prashant Dalvi, 24, allegedly sexually harrassed her, abused and assaulted her for money to buy alcohol. He also allegedly impregnated her twice and made her abort both pregnancies. The woman’s family had allegedly spoken to Dalvi’s aunt and sister for their marriage, but they had opposed their relationship citing opposition to an interfaith marriage.
On March 23, the woman allegedly died by suicide in her Andheri (West) home. When her mother returned from home, she found the door locked from inside. With the help of a neighbour the door was opened and the woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan. She was rushed to the Cooper hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The deceased woman’s sister checked for information on the victim’s phone and found that her sister had recorded a video which was open on her Whatsapp chat with Dalvi, but she had not sent it to him. Her sister then sent it to Dalvi to ensure the video did not get deleted, the police complaint stated.
As per the FIR, Dalvi was in a relationship with the victim for the past four years, according to her mother.
“Dalvi had promised to marry my daughter. She was very much involved in her relationship with him and in the relationship she got pregnant twice, but as their marriage was getting delayed, she had to undergo two abortions on his instructions. Dalvi later refused to marry her,” the woman’s mother stated before the police.
She further added in her statement, “Dalvi was also demanding money from her from time to time for alcohol and was pressuring her to send intimate videos. Therefore, she was mentally disturbed and under stress. When she was alone at home, she made a video on her mobile phone addressing Dalvi and told him about the mental torture she was facing. Frustrated by the mental torture she was facing, she ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.”

Speaking to The Indian Express, the mother said, “We have also found a three page letter written by my daughter as a diary item in which she has narrated her ordeal right from the day she first met Dalvi. She has also given details of the addictions Dalvi has and the money she had given to him.
We will be handing over this letter to the police soon. After my daughter’s death, my health deteriorated, hence there was a delay in filing the case.”
Police have booked Dalvi under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and are verifying the allegations made by deceased woman’s family against him and are investigating the matter.
