A 48-year-old man died after an alleged violent altercation over a parking space in Kolkata’s Tangra area on Sunday.
Arun Kumar Gupta, a resident of Mathurbabu Lane in Tangra, was allegedly beaten up by Aryan Shaw and his brother when he objected to Shaw parking his four-wheeler in his parking space.
Aryan (28) and his brother Rajesh (36) have been arrested, said police.
As per the complaint lodged by the Gupta family, the 48-year-old told Aryan Shaw not to park his Tata S vehicle in his usual two-wheeler parking spot. As an argument ensued, Aryan called his brother, and they started beating him up. Gupta reportedly sustained severe injuries to his chest and head. Neighbours and relatives intervened and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he died.
Residents of the area alleged a more brutal turn of events, claiming that the three accused threw Gupta into a canal, which they believe led to his death.
“As per statement of eyewitnesses and the complaint received by Gupta’s family, a case has been registered. Rajesh and Aryan have been arrested,” said a police officer at Tangra Police Station.
This is the second such incident when a quarrel over parking has turned fatal in Kolkata. Last month, a 38-year-old cab driver was beaten up by a group of unidentified persons in the Bijoygarh area over parking the car. The cab driver later died at a hospital during treatment.
