Netflix Content Head Summoned Over IC 814 Controversy: Report

New Delhi: Netflix content head has been summoned over the ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, Netflix series directed by Anubhav Sinha. The series has become embroiled in controversy for hiding Muslim identities of IC 814 hijacks with alias names. As per an India Today report, the Anubhav Sinha-directed series has become embroiled in controversy for allegedly altering the names of two hijackers to Hindu names.

As per the same report, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked the Netflix content head to appear before it on Tuesday, September 2, 2024.

Earlier on Monday morning, BJP’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya tweeted about the IC 814 series. Malviya spoke about Anubhav Sinha criminalising intent by using Hindu names for the hijackers of the plane.

 

‘IC 814: The Kandahar Attack’ dramatises evets from the real-life hijack that happened in 1999, affecting hundreds of passengers on the flight. The flight was piloted by Captain Devi Sharan, who also wrote his experiences from the terrifying hijack, in his book ‘Flight Into Fear’.

The Indian Airline 814 flight was diverted to multile location over the course of 8 days of hijack. It flew from Amritsar to Lahore and from there to Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The five men responsible for the hijack wwere depicted in the series with codenames such as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar, However, the use of the two names in particular, Bhola and Shankar has come under fire.

People have accused the filmmaker, Anubhav Sinha, for purposely choosing Hindu names, used as alias’ for the terrorists, in a way misrepresenting facts and inciting religious discord.

The IC 814: Kandahar Hijack stars Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Pahwa, Arvind Swami, Amrita Puri, DIa Mirza, Kumud Mushra, Arvind Swami, Patralekhaan, and several others in key roles. 

The series, which has majorly been adapted from the book Flight into Fear: The Captain’s Story written by Srinjoy CHowdhury and Devi Sharan, the captain of the hijacked plane.
