Mumbai residents will soon have the convenience of availing all public transport in the city on a single card with the new ‘Mumbai One’ smart card, after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave the go-ahead Friday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the development, saying the backend work and digital architecture of the card would be done within a month. “Once we have the system architecture in place, we will roll out the Mumbai One card for all Mumbaikars. It will indeed be a game-changer for urban mobility,” he said.

Fadnavis also highlighted the need for Indian Railways’ backing in integrating the local train services, which constitute the backbone of Mumbai’s transportation system. “Railways have a significant contribution to make towards Mumbai’s daily commute. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave a green signal to this ambitious initiative, and we are ready to roll out the card,” he added.

The project seeks to do away with the inconvenience of purchasing separate tickets for different modes of public transport. The card will provide access to local trains, the metro, the monorail, and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses.

Other public transport systems, including Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), will also come under the card.
