Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that the senior officials of the West Bengal administration must learn from the Mahakumbh accident in Uttar Pradesh and take necessary measures to avoid any mishap during the inauguration of the Jagannath Temple, in Digha on April 29-30.
Addressing a meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, to review the ongoing preparations ahead of the inauguration of the temple, CM Banerjee instructed the top officials to install large screens in different places in Digha and also across the state to telecast the inauguration ceremony of the Jagannath Temple.
“Many people died in the accident at Mahakumbh. We should learn from that accident and take necessary steps to avoid such mishaps during inauguration of Jagannath temple,” the CM said, adding that officials should manage and avoid huge crowds.
The Jagannath Temple in Digha, built by the West Bengal government will be inaugurated on April 30 and a “joggo” (Puja) will be held within the temple premises on April 29. “Cultural programmes will be held on the day of inauguration and the consecration will be established on April 30,” CM Banerjee said.
Mamata Banerjee also announced that she will donate rupees 5,00,001 for the golden broom, which will be used in the temple. “I will send the cheque from my personal account very soon,” she said.
CM Banerjee also instructed to make a watch tower as well as install sufficient number of CCTV cameras on the Kolkata-Digha route. She, further, proposed setting up “May I help you” and medical assistance booths along the route.
Additionally, the chief minister mentioned that the temple will also have three sitting hangers capable of accommodating around 15,000 people.

She said there will be three hangers in temple premises to accommodate almost 15,000 people. “We should make some makeshift tents like we made during the Gangasagar Mela, to accommodate extra people who will come to see the inauguration. In those tent areas, self help group women will make food for the visitors. There should be green cars for the elderly also.”
