IIM Calcutta vs IIM Mumbai: Who leads the placement race? A comparative analysis – Times of India

Two of India’s premier management institutes, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai are dream schools for many aspiring management students. In the NIRF Rankings 2024, IIMC has secured rank 5 while IIMM has secured rank 6, in fact, since 2021, both of the institutes have secured a rank in the top 10 of the management category of NIRF Rankings.So, what sets these institutes apart? Beyond their distinguished faculty, advanced courses, research facilities, and impressive campuses, one major differentiator is their placement records. Today, we will compare which of these esteemed IIMs excels more in terms of placements.

Placement Records: A comparative between IIM Mumbai and IIM Calcutta

So which institute is better in terms of placement records? Here is a look at the last three years’ data of both the institutes published by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the management category 2024:

When comparing the placement data of IIM Calcutta and IIM Mumbai over the three academic years from 2020-21 to 2022-23, several trends emerge. IIM Calcutta consistently graduated a slightly higher number of students than IIM Mumbai, with the highest number of graduates (540) in 2021-22. In contrast, IIM Mumbai saw a decrease in graduates over the same period, from 519 in 2020-21 to 490 in 2022-23.
In terms of median salary, both institutions demonstrated positive growth. IIM Calcutta’s median salary increased steadily from Rs. 27.6 lakhs in 2020-21 to Rs. 33.6 lakhs in 2022-23. IIM Mumbai also showed an upward trend, with the median salary rising from Rs. 25.8 lakhs in 2020-21 to Rs. 32 lakhs in 2022-23. Notably, while IIM Calcutta consistently offered higher median salaries than IIM Mumbai, the gap narrowed in 2021-22 when both institutions reported a median salary of Rs. 31 lakhs. However, by 2022-23, IIM Calcutta again led with a median salary Rs. 1.6 lakhs higher than that of IIM Mumbai.
Interestingly, in all three academic years, no student from either institution opted for higher education, indicating a strong preference for entering the workforce immediately after graduation. This suggests that both IIM Calcutta and IIM Mumbai offer robust employment opportunities and high levels of confidence among graduates in their career prospects.
In summary, while both institutions exhibit strong placement performance and salary growth, IIM Calcutta has maintained a slight edge in both the number of graduates and the median salary, particularly in the most recent year. However, IIM Mumbai remains competitive, particularly given its consistent salary improvements.
