How Reputation Does (And Does Not) Drive People to Punish Without Looking

While we do find that reputation inspires punish-ment that is sometimes unreflective, we also find that people correctly believe that engaging with opposing perspectives will be perceived positively by others. Thus, by giving people opportunities to broadcast their engagement with other viewpoints, it may actually be possible to leverage reputation to motivate more careful deliberation.
