Two days after a software developer was assaulted and his bike was damaged in Gurgaon, four men were arrested on Tuesday, said police. The video of the assault was widely shared on social media, prompting calls for the arrest of the accused. The clip showed the men damaging the bike of the accused with sticks and thrashing him despite his appeals to let him go.
Hardik Sharma (32), who works as a software developer with a popular food ordering and delivery firm, was allegedly assaulted on Sunday morning by four men who were travelling in an SUV. The incident happened near Dwarka Expressway when he was out with a bikers’ group headed to Manesar. The SUV, Sharma alleged, drove recklessly past him and his fellow bikers.
A police team led by Inspector Shahid Ahmad, Station House Officer of Sector-37, arrested the four accused near the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, said officers. The suspects have been identified as Bhanu Sharma (33), a gym owner, Deepak Singh (24), a gym trainer, Pragya Sharma (23), who leases cricket grounds, and Rajat Singh (24), currently unemployed. All the accused live in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar.
The arrests came after Hardik Sharma, 32, earlier in the day shared his frustration and claimed he was not getting updates from the police on the case. “They are not picking up my calls, giving any updates, or arresting the accused. My lawyer told me that all the offences invoked against the accused are bailable. I am not happy with that,” Sharma, who hails from Hisar, had told The Indian Express.
Police had lodged an FIR at the Sector 37 police station late Sunday night, invoking Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita offences related to voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, rash driving, mischief to damage property, and criminal intimidation. Sharma said in his complaint that the accused were drunk and hit his head with a steel baseball bat. He survived the blow because he was wearing a helmet.
Sharma, who has been living in Gurgaon since 2023, also alleged that it took him 12 hours to get his complaint filed. “The incident happened at 7.20 am on Sunday. At 8 am, we reached a police station but kept getting sent from one station to the other for about six-seven hours. After we finally managed to get to the right station, it took another six hours to get the FIR lodged,” he said.
