Dooley’s Week at Emory University: The legendary skeleton with the power to cancel classes!

“Presidents may come, presidents may go; professors may come, professors may go; students may come, students may go; but Dooley lives on forever!” Welcome to Emory University, where a skeleton holds the extraordinary power to cancel your classes! Meet Dooley, the Lord of Misrule, and the centerpiece of one of the university’s most unique traditions: Dooley’s Week.

Saif Ali Khan Health Update

Hosted by the Student Programming Council (SPC), Dooley’s Week is a lively spring semester tradition at Emory University, brimming with social events, concerts, giveaways, and mouthwatering food. Dooley, the beloved skeleton, is far more than a mascot—he’s a cherished symbol of pride and joy for Emory students.

A Quick History Lesson

Dooley’s origins trace back to a humorous column in Emory’s literary journal, The Emory Phoenix, but his first on-campus appearance remains shrouded in mystery. Dubbed the “Lord of Misrule,” Dooley rose to fame during Dooley’s Frolics Week, cementing his place as a cherished university tradition.
However, Dooley’s fame hasn’t come without its challenges! In the 1950s, Georgia Tech students pulled a notorious prank, kidnapping him and breaking six of his ribs, according to the official website of the university. Since then, Dooley has been protected by bodyguards, with his true identity kept secret. He communicates through appointed spokespeople, adding to his mystique.

The Magic of Dooley’s Week

One of the most exciting parts of Dooley’s Week is the chance for students to encounter the Lord of Misrule himself. Dooley might make a surprise visit to your classroom, and if you impress him with a cleverly written limerick, he might just cancel your class for the day—talk about motivation to get creative!
In 2022, as per the university’s official website, the SPC introduced a spectacular addition to the festivities: giant skeletons over 10 feet tall. During Dooley’s Week, the campus transforms into a hub of excitement. You might spot a student in a skeleton costume flanked by four serious-looking bodyguards, a towering 10-foot skeleton lounging on the grounds, or crowds enjoying delicious food and an unforgettable concert. It’s a celebration where tradition meets creativity, making every moment of Dooley’s Week one to remember!

Dooley’s Week 2024: A Nod to the Olympics

In 2024, Dooley’s Week was held from April 1 to April 5, with the theme “Dooley’s Olympics,” celebrating the spirit of the 2024 Summer Olympics. The week featured Olympic-inspired events, uniting students in fun and festivity.
From its quirky traditions to its lively celebrations, Dooley’s Week is a testament to Emory’s vibrant campus life—where even a skeleton can steal the spotlight!
