Two Delhi Traffic Police officers under the Shahdara Circle Tuesday arrested two armed snatchers involved in a robbery at Dilshad Garden despite being shot at while trying to apprehend them.
According to the Delhi Police, the incident unfolded when two armed men, Imran, 26, and Warees, 35, snatched three gold chains from Praveen Soni near Chetak Complex. The assailants attempted to flee the scene on a two-wheeler and headed towards the Chintamani Red Light, said police.
Shiva Thakur, a resident who witnessed the robbery, followed the accused and promptly alerted the traffic police personnel at Chintamani Chowk. Responding to the alert, Sub-Inspector Sanjeev and Constable Rahul Nain signalled the suspects to stop. When the two men attempted to escape, Nain struck their motorcycle with his leg, causing them to fall.
In the ensuing confrontation, Imran opened fire at Sanjeev, however, the officer overpowered and apprehended him. Simultaneously, Warees attempted to fire as well but was tackled and restrained by Nain. Sanjeev sustained minor injuries during the scuffle, said the police.
Videos of the scuffle went viral on social media, showing passersby beating the two men on a busy road after the traffic policemen had disarmed them. The police can also be seen attempting to calm the situation down.
The police said they have recovered the motorcycle, a pistol with six live cartridges from Imran, and another pistol with four live cartridges from Warees. They said that the stolen gold chains were also retrieved from them.
The police said their initial investigations revealed that Warees has 36 prior criminal involvements, and the verification of Imran’s background is underway.
