The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is preparing for the upcoming monsoon, with a flood control office coming up in its Sector 44 headquarters.
Neha Sharma, Public Relations Officer, GMDA, said on Tuesday the action plan involves increasing the number of road gullies, which are narrow sloping stretches along the edges of roads that direct floodwater towards drains.
“We noticed there were gaps in ensuring the construction of road gullies in some parts of the city, so we are fixing that and ensuring the flow to the drains is seamless,” she said.
The de-silting of storm-water drains, mock drills for GMDA officials’ operational readiness, and the clearing of debris from drainage pipes are also underway ahead of the July-September rainy season. “This will ensure quick discharge of floodwater as and when required,” the PRO explained.
Adding and strengthening of check dams at the Aravallis will also be a priority to reduce the burden on the city’s drains and prevent the flowing of storm water right into areas like Golf Course Road.
These dams have proved to be quite effective in recent years when seen in tandem with pumps and drainage networks installed in underpasses, Sharma said.
The Badshahpur master drain is also being cleaned and de-silted well in time for the monsoon, alongside drains in Sectors 68-75.

A long-term measure that is a work in progress is the construction of leg 4 of the city’s drainage network, which involves a master drain for areas including newer sectors along Southern Peripheral Road, the PRO added.
Locations like Rajiv Chowk, Khandsa Chowk and the area around Tau Devi Lal Stadium are likely to be in focus for the deployment of suction tankers and tanker-mounted pumps as per requirements.
Vikram Sharma, Executive Engineer, Drainage Division, GMDA, said an action plan incorporating all the above and identifying key flood-prone stretches was awaiting approval.
