Jaipur Literature Festival will continue, irrespective of its format: Sanjoy Roy, JLF Producer

Earlier this year, the Rajasthan government ruled that the iconic Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), dubbed the greatest literary show on earth, would have to shift out of the Diggy Palace, its home for 13 years on logistical issues. Then came the coronavirus pandemic that has locked down India and much of the world and there was a question mark on whether the situation would stabilise for the 14th edition to be held as scheduled for January 28-February1, 2021. Regardless of the testing times, the show will go on, JLF Producer Sanjay K. Roy asserts though there may be changes in the format.“It’s too early to look at what form the Jaipur Literature Festival will take for 2021. We are confident of hosting the festival in 2021 albeit with changes given the challenges presently...

Coronavirus pandemic: Activewear is in demand as quarantine drags on

Being stuck at home for weeks on end can be uncomfortable. Many Americans are responding by stocking up on yoga pants and hoodies.Kohl’s Corp. is the latest retailer to benefit from the trend, saying Tuesday that it saw a greater than 100% increase in activewear sales last quarter. That helped soften the blow from an otherwise rough stretch, as the company suspended its dividend and share repurchases to counter a sharp drop in demand during the coronavirus pandemic. While Kohl’s stores were closed last month to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the company said it refocused on digital marketing.Online sales jumped 60% in April and have continued to grow this month even as the chain reopens stores, Chief Executive Officer Michelle Gass said in an interview. “That’s really ...

No money, food, work or help: Textile handicraft artisans struggle as lockdown continues

Weaving the gossamer fine fabric which made his hometown Chanderi famous the world over, Mohammed Dilshad says his life is in tatters with no money, no food and no work.Till a little before the lockdown started on March 25, he would be out for days at a stretch, participating in craft fairs like the Dastkar bazaar in big cities and coming back to his Madhya Pradesh home only to produce the rolls of ‘chanderi’ fashioned into saris, dupattas and dresses. Life had settled into a routine – not an affluent existence but a comfortable one -- but that all seems in the distant past. Help has been negligible in these difficult times and even managing two meals a day is becoming a challenge, said the fourth generation Chanderi craftsperson based out of the small town, famous f...

Would couture masks be a new addition to the fashion market?

The pandemic has paved way for many changes in our lifestyles. And in a counter-intuitive move, bridal masks are now taking confident strides into the couture market. With many having already adapted to the idea, brides are now looking forward to wearing them for wedding festivities. But the question here is, will bridal face masks find a prominent space on the couture map? Here’s what designers have to say. “These masks will be fashionable and yet would let a bride express herself. However, they should be breathable and functionality should be the prime focus while designing them. Printed ones, and masks made with textured fabrics would be the way forward,” says designer Payal Singhal.Seconding this, designer Sonaakshi Raaj says, “The masks will soon become a fun accessory...

Review: The Tibetan Suitcase by Tsering Namgyal Khortsa

Rs 300, Blackneck BooksAny book that begins in praise of momos has already won me over. It is only befitting that a novel about a mysterious land should shroud its own beginnings in the labours of fate. The Tibetan Suitcase begins with Khortsa, the novelist himself, making an appearance as a business journalist, being handed a suitcase filled with letters, stories, newspaper clippings, press releases, and diaries that used to belong to a Tibetan writer. It is his story that the author’s persona is exhorted to birth. From there on, the reader is thrown head first into a group of eclectic characters such as the businessman who turns his haunted house into a meditation centre, a beer-drinking lama and the writer-turned-meditation guru who ended up running the centre. As Khort...

Ruskin Bond 86th Birthday: Of simplicity, life in the mountains and solitude

Ruskin Bond, the storyteller whose words are as uplifting as they are a balm for fatigued souls, has turned 86 today and in a career spanning over six decades, most of his books have been instant bestsellers. The writer of the Dehra hills has chronicled the lives of shy boys and their grandparents, of ghosts who sit beside winding roads awaiting a lift, or of the little bear atop a plum tree – all of which has readers across age groups, some who’ve grown up with these stories and passed on the legacy to the younger members of their families.Ruskin Bond has been living in Landour, a British India-era cantonment town just above Mussoorie, since 1964. Author Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Macondo was a constructed place. But Landour is an important part of Bond’s stories. His descr...

Excerpt: Hop On; My Adventures on Boats, Trains and Planes by Ruskin Bond

Talking Cub; Kindle edition Rs 157.50Land Ahoy! The first time I was on water was equally exciting. One day, Daddy took me for a trip in an Arab dhow. These dhows, or sailing boats, dotted the sea around the Jamnagar port, their large sails billowing in the wind. Mostly slender, the boats came in many sizes, and were used to transport all kinds of goods up and down the west coast. The boat on which Daddy took me was a big one. He had got talking to the captain, one day, while we were out walking on the sea side, and the man invited us for a short trip. The morning of the boat ride I was so excited that I was ready to run out of the house as soon as I woke up, without changing or brushing or even thinking about breakfast — a most unusual thing for me as I rarely forget about...

It’s time to flex the lex: Demystifying new words and top searches in a Covid-19 affected world

This year has been a roller-coaster ride, bringing with it drastic overhauls and dynamic shifts in not just economies and trade, but in language as well. As a result of Covid-19, many new words have become part of the common lexicon. A quick scan through web searches throws up quite a mixed bag of searches in India. At first, the searches brought results for the medical terminology, such as PPE Kits, but as the lockdowns kept getting extended, the searches showed results for the social outcome of the Coronavirus. Searches also show that the most trending words change if there’s a national event, government announcement or celebrity news. Most of this terminology is added to dictionaries including Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Merriam-Webster in real time and monthly ...

Akbar was intensely invested in experiencing the world: Ira Mukhoty

For someone who claims to be an accidental writer of history, Ira Mukhoty’s writing is nuanced and deeply personal. Her third and latest work is the herculean effort to chart the life of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. Titled Akbar: The Great Mughal, its pages paint the life of a personality, “intensely invested in experiencing the world and forging his destiny”. “Akbar was the sort of person who inhabited his world in a visceral, all-consuming way so every experience was valuable in shaping various facets of his personality,” says the author about his formative years, living in exile when his father Humayun lost the Mughal Empire to Sher Shah Suri. It would take Humayun 15 years to re-establish the Mughal Empire, before he stumbled on the stairs of his library, to his eve...
