Centre’s neutral stance in Gaza not in line with traditional position: Sharad Pawar

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday raised concerns over developments in Gaza and questioned the Union government’s neutral stance on aggression as he said that India’s stance of neutrality was not in line with its traditional position. Stating that Israel is doing good work in the field of agriculture, Pawar said, “But on the other hand, what is happening in Gaza, where innocent children and people have lost their lives, their homes have been destroyed, and while all this is happening, many countries in the world have remained silent.” Speaking about India’s stance, he said, “India–be it during Indira Gandhi’s time, Nehru’s time, or later–always took a different stand on this issue, one that protected humanity. That was India’s image. But the continuous attacks and destruction of innoce...

WTC final 2025 | A new dawn — how braveheart Bavuma and his men defied the odds

As Temba Bavuma strolled the Lord’s outfield on Saturday afternoon, the mace in one hand and young son Lihle in his other arm, a sea of emotion would have swirled through his mind. Just moments previously, he had helped end years of heartbreak, masterminding an extraordinary five-wicket conquest of Australia in the final of the World Test Championship. Bavuma wasn’t just the captain of the all-conquering South African team, he was its leader in every sense of the word. It wasn’t just redemption time for the Proteas, but also vindication of Bavuma’s faith in himself, of the establishment’s faith in him. There are certain tags that simply refuse to go away. They surface without warning, and then develop a life of their own, mushrooming beyond imagination to stick like an unrelenting leech. Mo...

South African cricket’s rugby moment: How Temba Bavuma’s men entered a realm occupied by Siya Kolisi’s Springboks

When strains of that authentic rugby anthem, an ode to resilience, ‘Shosholoza’ – streamed out of a Lord’s corner, cricket was being ushered into an exalted space occupied by what is the gold standard of sporting excellence in South Africa. Both Temba Bavuma and the highly decorated rugby captain, Siya Kolisi have been showered with the sound of that melody. But aside of being the first Black world-title winning skippers, the Proteas and Springboks have little in common in how the destination was reached – 30 years apart really for their country’s first proper major crown.Global glory, nothing less, needed to be etched in stone, or on a mace, for Bavuma to seek parity for his chosen sport, with what is the defining identity of South Africa – rugby. After South Africa nervily knocked off th...

Raigad guardian minister post: Tiff between Tatkare and Gogawale escalates as another NCP leader threatens to ‘expose’ the latter

The ongoing war of words between NCP leader and Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare and Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale has escalated ahead of the upcoming civic body polls, with NCP spokesperson Anand Paranjape on Sunday threatening to expose Gogawale’s alleged “criminal background and financial irregularities” within a week. The remarks came amid a simmering tension within the Mahayuti alliance partners–Shiv Sena and NCP–over the post of Guardian Minister for Raigad district. The guardian ministership has become a bone of contention between Tatkare and Gogawale, both of whom wield significant local influence. Owing to their old rivalries, both the leaders from Mahayuti have been trading barbs for the past six months, which is now even spilling into the open through a series of increasingly person...

With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections approaching, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with the party’s Shakha Pramukhs from across Mumbai, urging them to intensify grassroots outreach and start preparing the cadre for a full-scale campaign. Addressing office-bearers at Shiv Sena Bhavan, Thackeray asked each Shakha Pramukh to personally reach out to at least 300 families in their wards. He also instructed them to activate the party’s organisational machinery including group heads, polling agents and leaders of frontal organisations, in a bid to consolidate support across Mumbai’s 227 municipal wards. Sources present at the meeting said that Thackeray stressed the need to “highlight the development work” done by the Uddhav Thacke...

Hockey: India dealt very late heartbreak by Australia, Harendra Singh gets the start he wants but not the finish

Before the match, India women’s hockey team head coach had a simple wish. What he witnessed on Saturday in the third and fourth quarters against Australia – where his side fought back from 0-3 down to make it 2-3 in a hard-fought defeat – he wanted to see in the first two quarters on Sunday in the FIH Pro League rematch. “I want us to start in the first two quarters as we played in the last two, where we executed our plans really well.” He got that wish as India took the lead early. Unfortunately, Australia broke Indian hearts with practically the final action of the day, snatching a winner with under 30 seconds left on the clock, to prevail 2-1 in London. Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke (3′) put India ahead but goals from Amy Lawton (37’) and Lexie Pickering (60’) denied Harendra’s side what wo...

Drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore vanish from police station, then recovered: SHO transferred, 3 cops suspended

Earlier this week, around three kilograms of drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore — recovered during a murder case probe — vanished from Southwest Delhi’s Kishan Garh Police Station in a bizarre incident similar to the robbery of Rs 51 lakh in cash and two boxes of gold from the high-security malkhana (storage room) of the Delhi Police Special Cell’s old office on Lodhi Road recently. In a twist, however, as an inquiry was initiated on June 11 in the matter, the drugs were recovered from a plot in the neighbourhood, said officers. Now, the SHO of the police station has been transferred to the District Lines Police station, and three police staffers have been suspended following a round of questioning, officers added. Officials said on June 9, police initiated a probe into a murder case after the bod...

Temba Bavuma’s never-give-up mantra on batting at Lord’s with injury: ‘I went against advice from management, willing to deal with consequences’

When the moment arrived, it must have been truly overwhelming for every South African cricket fan. Even more so if you happened to be at Lord’s – the venue where South Africa finally became world champions on Sunday, beating Australia in the World Test Championship Final. Tears overflowed. Former players choked up on air. Their all-time greats celebrated the moment as if it was their own, from the stands to the broadcast centre. Yet, when the camera panned to the balcony, their captain, Temba Bavuma sat with his head buried in his hands. For someone who played second fiddle to Aiden Markram in that historic chase and sat back and watched, he watched history being made from the front seat of the Lord’s balcony. It was as if Bavuma was oblivious to what was happening around him. Not even whe...

This is the most dangerous sign of a collagen deficiency

Mumbai to generate additional 7,200 MLD of water by recycling overflowing water from Tulsi and Vihar lakes

In a much-needed push to Mumbai’s existing water stock, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is set to generate additional water of 7,200 million litres by recycling the overflowing rainwater from Vihar lake and make them fit for potable usage. During the monsoon, surplus water from the catchment areas of three major lakes in Mumbai–Tulsi, Vihar and Powai–gets channelled to the Mithi river through natural estuaries. As a result, the surplus rainwater flowing into the river overflows, resulting in waterlogging at areas like Dharavi, BKC and Kurla which are close to the river. “Due to climate change, high intensity rains are occurring within a short duration period and often the heavy rains coincide with the high tide of sea at river confluences resulting in flooding across the flood-plain...

‘Dual nationality row’: Newton Das to be struck off Bengal voter list soon

The process of removing ‘Kakdwip voter’ Newton Das from the electoral roll has commenced, confirmed sources in the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer on Sunday. The decision follows a probe into allegations linking Das, a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency, to protests in Bangladesh as a voter there, raising questions about his nationality. A relative of Das also claimed that he has voter cards of both India and Bangladesh. Das, 32, has been at the centre of a political storm after images surfaced showing him participating in the student-led agitation in Dhaka in July 2024, which ultimately led to the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina government. These images depict Das wielding a stick and waving a flag during the protests, prompting the Opposition BJP in Wes...

The Mortality of the Dalai Lama and its Scriptural Sources: More on Tibetan Political Theology

The prospect of embodied divinity was not uncommon in Tibetan discourse and practice in general. The point is that this choice of terms forces the issue. To assert a human god’s ongoing karmic dependency is to define divinity and mortality in terms that are direct inversions of one another. In this final part of a two-part study the 5th Dalai Lama’s divine kingship, the author explores how the concept of residual karma explains the Dalai Lama’s mortality despite his spiritual perfection. Drawing on scriptural sources and the writings of the Desi—a secular regent in Tibetan governance—the essay shows how this concept helped reconcile divine kingship with the human realities of suffering and death. The Divinity of the Dalai Lama and its Scriptural Sources: A Study in Tibetan Political Theology

The fifth Dalai Lama was figured as the state’s absolute ruler on the basis of a power in excess of his own person. In technical terms, he was the latest in a rebirth line of Avalokiteśvara, here assuming the novel identity of a “renunciate king” or vow-bound sovereign. In the first part of his two-part study, Ian MacCormack examines the theological foundations of the Dalai Lama’s divine kingship as articulated by the Desi Sangyé Gyatso (1653–1705), the 5th Dalai Lama’s regent. This nuanced depiction underscores the complex interplay between ultimate truth and conventional reality in Tibetan political theology. Part two of this study can be found here Source link
