French Open: How Iga Swiatek roared back from a nightmare start to keep her Roland Garros streak alive

It was a tense exchange on Friday in a press conference with Amelie Mauresmo, the tournament director of the French Open that opened a debate about whether Roland Garros had been unfair in their showcasing of women’s tennis. No women’s matches have been scheduled for the single-match night-session on the showpiece Court Philippe-Chatrier since 2023. Mauresmo defended the tournament’s position resolutely, claiming it was not a case of discrimination but merely an attempt to give the spectators their money’s worth with a longer match: with the men playing best-of-five sets as opposed to the women’s best-of-three.It can be left to the opinions of a discerning French crowd, who have watched Grand Slam tennis for generations, over which is the superior entertainment product – Novak Djokovic’s p...

Sharmishta Panoli arrest brings Congress’s Karti, BJP’s Suvendu on same page; Dutch MP also chimes in

New Delhi: The arrest of Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student and influencer, has invited criticism from various quarters. But, for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal it has had another unintended consequence—bringing leaders of the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the same page, at least on this issue. Sharmistha was arrested by Kolkata police from Haryana’s Gurugram Friday night in connection with an FIR lodged at Kolkata’s Garden Reach police station last month over an Instagram video on Operation Sindoor in which she made alleged controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad. She subsequently deleted the video and issued an apology on 15 May, but the Kolkata Police took her into custody saying she and her family “absconded” and attempts to serve notice...

Repkong Tantric Practitioners and their Environment: Observing the Vow of Not Taking Life

One of Alak’s disciples, a 73-year-old ngakpa, explained in an interview the traditional (and previously pervasive) view about caterpillar fungus. He stated that the problem with collecting caterpillar fungus, from the Buddhist point of view, is that one cannot be sure when digging whether the caterpillar is actually dead or not. By killing the caterpillar, a collector may entail a breach of his or her vow to not kill any sentient being. Tibetan villagers in Amdo balance their tantric Buddhist commitments—particularly the vow against taking animal life—with livelihood practices like caterpillar fungus collection that often involve killing insects. Through fieldwork and interviews, the author highlights the villagers’ religious lives, especially of women, and the moral negotiations they n...

Pre-Buddhist Elements in Himalayan Buddhism: The Institution of Oracles

One of the distinguishing features of Himalayan Buddhism is that it has accommodated within itself a good number of elements and traits of the pre-Buddhist indigenous religions and folk traditions. This paper explores how practices from Tibetan indigenous religions, particularly the use of spirit mediums and oracles, have been incorporated into Himalayan Buddhism. It argues that these pre-Buddhist elements continue to exist within Tibetan Buddhist institutions, highlighting a syncretism between the two. Source link
