With a solid technique and good mindset, Sai Sudharsan a likely candidate for India cap after Rohit Sharma retirement

It is a scene that was played out in Tamil Nadu cricket three years ago and one likely to be repeated over the next fortnight. Post Covid, when the state team decided to move on from openers past their sell-by date, the selectors made a bold move to go for B Sai Sudharsan. The left-hander didn’t have eye-popping numbers in the TNCA league but made 179 on his first-class debut. Now with Rohit Sharma retiring from Tests, the national selectors are pinning their hopes on a similarly smooth transition for the 23-year-old in India colours on the tour of England starting next month. In an IPL season where the flamboyance and fearlessness of Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre has gained traction, Sai Sudharsan’s flair has also stood out. In a stride toward inclusive education, Jadavpur University has taken a major leap forward for its visually challenged students. This transformative step came with the support of the Rotary Foundation and includes a range of imported assistive instruments aimed at enhancing learning experiences for students with visual challenges. Rohit’s Test career — a selfless journey beyond the numbers

Were he that sort, Rohit Sharma would put his feet up on his first day as a former Test cricketer and reflect on a series of what ifs. What if he hadn’t rolled his ankle on the morning of his scheduled Test debut against South Africa in Nagpur in February 2010, a development that obliquely postponed his entry into the five-day game by more than three and a half years? What if he hadn’t unleashed 177 and 111 not out in his first two Test innings, knocks that were subliminally brilliant and yet raised such unjustified expectations that he was always chasing his tail? What if he had shown greater consistency and been treated with greater quality of opportunities in Test cricket? What if, just when he was beginning to find a second wind in 2016 when Anil Kumble was the head coach, he hadn’t pic...

‘Net master’ Ayush Shetty trumps OG ace of dribble game, Kidambi Srikanth, in dogfight to enter Taipei Open quarterfinals

Bangalore’s badminton coach Krishna Kumar recalls a tall Ayush Shetty — when he trained at I Sport Academy for five years — setting himself a unique challenge even as he was skimming 6 feet.“Daily for 30-40 minutes, even back then, his mind was set on perfecting the net,” he recalls about what in itself isn’t particularly strange. “He would declare that out of 10 attempts, at least 7 times he would get himself a point on the net chord! And he would make it. That much precision he trained for,” the former coach says, revealing the cheeky skill to nick the tape and ensure it tipples over to the other side. Ayush now trains at the bigger Prakash Padukone academy with Sagar Chopda and Vimal Kumar, having helped him add variations from the back court to his game. But Krishna Kumar, a coach know...
