The crew was drawn from small villages in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra and brought together and whipped into a single breathing monolit...

Asian Games: India survive odds, ride Sunil Chhetri penalty for Myanmar draw and Round of 16 spot

“I want to say a lot of good things. But it’s been difficult.”Sunil Chhetri tried sounding upbeat but the reality of the situation was too harsh for him to ignore. They haven’t trained even once since landing in Hangzhou last Monday. The players haven’t had proper sleep for a week, some managing a full night’s rest only on Saturday. And there aren’t enough options on the bench – when Chhetri asked to be substituted in the first two games, coach Igor Stimac didn’t have enough players to turn to. “So, this is just me giving you an idea of how preparation isn’t there,” Chhetri said. India’s all-time leading goal scorer’s first-half penalty in the 1-1 draw against Myanmar ensured that the hurriedly-assembled, ragtag bunch of players that reached Hangzhou less than 24 hours before their Asia...

Asian Games rowing: Why were there nine men competing in the Men’s Eight rowing event?

When the Indian rowing team claimed the silver medal in the Men’s Eight category on Sunday, eight of them sat in the long boat with their backs to the finish line, rowing as if their lives depended on it. There was a ninth man in the boat, Dhananjay Uttam Pande, who was not rowing. In fact, he was the only member of the team facing the finish line as he sat in the stern of the boat without an oar in his hands. Why? Because, Pande, the oldest member of the team at 32, is a coxswain for the team! Not just the oldest, at a height of 5’7”, he is also shorter than his teammates: Neeraj (6’2”), Naresh Kalwaniya (6’1”), Neetish Kumar (6’1”), Charanjeet Singh (6’0”), Jaswinder Singh (6’2”), Bheem Singh (5’12”), Punit Kumar (6’2”), Ashish (5’11”). The nifty little device that helps the coxswain...
