Coach Igor Stimac is unlikely to accompany the Indian football team to the Asian Games next week, where India could be forced to field a weakened team owing to a clash with the Indian Super League (ISL), the country’s top division competition, The Indian Express has learnt. India takes on hosts China at the Hangzhou Games in exactly a week, on September 19. The new season of the ISL kicks off on September 21. As the tussle between the ISL clubs and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) intensifies over the availability of players, uncertainty prevails over the Asiad squad. Under the rules, each country has to field an under-23 squad along with three senior players. Some of India’s finest national team players fall in that age group and were named in the initial squad along with senio...

Why Asian Games has become bone of contention between ISL franchises and football federation

A crucial year for Indian football – one in which the national team excelled at home in the SAFF Cup after a month’s camp with coach Igor Stimac and his staff – has suddenly seen a raging club vs country debate and scheduling conflicts in the lead-up to the Asian Games, laying bare the challenges faced by the footballing ecosystem in the country.A prolonged camp – a rarity for coach Stimac – resulted in an impressive run of results that raised hopes in Indian footballing circles. But it wasn’t just the results, but the in-game fitness displayed by players who were averaging over 12 kilometres run per game, playing pressing football high up the pitch, often outplaying teams traditionally considered better and ranked higher than India. This uptick in performance was considered an opportun...

Maybe that is because the bad guys seen from a different angle look like good guys. Are the good guys those who still believe Tests need to be focused on, or simply those who think that for cricket in any format to survive, greater attention should be paid to the grassroots? And since that requires money and the best way for a cricket board to make it i...

FIH withdraws Olympic qualifiers hosting rights from Pakistan

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Tuesday withdrew hosting rights of the Olympic Qualifiers from Pakistan, slated to be held next January. The FIH decision came as a result of the infighting between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and the state-owned Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). “The FIH, while taking away our hosting rights, made it clear it was convinced that the sports board and government were not willing to cooperate with the PHF in the successful hosting of the event,” said an inside in the PHF. The decision has come as a big blow to Pakistan hockey, which had got the rights to host an international event after more than a decade. The PHF had picked Lahore as the venue to host the event. Most Read 1 Jawan box office collection Day 5: Shah Rukh Kh...
