NEW DELHI: The prestigious Squash World Cup is set to take place in Chennai from June 13 to 17, as announced by the governing body of the sport in India on Monday. Seasoned pros Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa will spearhead the Indian challenge, aiming for success on their home turf.
The tournament will be hosted at the Express Avenue Mall and the Indian Squash & Triathlon Academy (ISTA), providing an exciting venue for both players and fans alike. The announcement of this eagerly anticipated event has generated significant buzz within the squash community.
A total of nine countries will be participating in the tournament, including host nation India. The other countries vying for glory are Hong Kong, China, Japan, Malaysia, Egypt, South Africa, Australia, and Colombia. The competition promises to showcase top-tier talent from across the globe, making it a highly anticipated event in the squash calendar.
Interestingly, Chennai previously played host to the World Cup in 2011, further adding to the city’s squash legacy. With the return of this prestigious tournament, fans can expect a thrilling display of skill, determination, and intense competition as players vie for the ultimate prize.
“I’m delighted to announce that Chennai will once again host the prestigious SDAT-WSF Squash World Cup from June 13 to 17. This tournament marks a new chapter in the history of our event as we revive and revamp it to enhance its significance further,” N Ramachandran, Honorary life president of Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), said at a press meet.
The upcoming World Cup is set to mark its fourth edition, and it brings notable changes in terms of gender parity and the points system. Unlike previous editions, each team will now consist of two men and two women, ensuring equal representation and promoting inclusivity in the sport.
The tournament will adopt a best-of-five games format for each match, adding an element of excitement and endurance to the competition. The players will engage in intense battles on the court, striving to outwit and outmaneuver their opponents.
The tournament will commence with a round-robin pool stage, where teams will face off against one another to secure a place in the knockout stage. This stage will witness intense clashes as teams compete for advancement towards the coveted title.
