Brighton secure European football with 3-1 win over Southampton – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Brighton & Hove Albion ensured they will play in Europe next season for the first time in their history after beating Southampton 3-1 in the Premier League at the Amex Stadium in Brighton on Sunday, with teenage striker Evan Ferguson scoring twice.
Brighton are sixth in the standings on 61 points and can no longer be caught by eighth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, meaning they are guaranteed a spot in Europe next season – either in the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.

The match began with missed opportunities from Kaoru Mitoma and Carlos Alcaraz. However, in the 29th minute, Brighton seized the advantage as Evan Ferguson’s powerful strike slipped beneath Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
The moment of brilliance continued as Mitoma displayed exceptional strength on the left wing, delivering a precise cross with the outside of his boot for Ferguson to head home, doubling Brighton’s lead.

Southampton’s Mohamed Elyounoussi managed to pull one back in the 58th minute, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Pascal Gross skillfully cut inside and unleashed a left-footed shot to seal the victory.
With this win, Brighton solidified their European qualification ambitions, while bottom-placed Southampton remained on 24 points, having already been relegated.
