Think Manchester City will win UCL title; Liverpool disappointed me the most: Don Hutchison | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison on Tuesday said it would be fascinating to see Lionel Messi back at La Liga.
Messi is set to leave Paris Saint Germain (PSG) this summer as his contract is about to expire. Barcelona is where Messi kicked off his career and he played for them till before he moves to PSG. Messi won four Champions League and 10 La Liga titles at Barcelona.
Messi wanted to stay at his childhood club – Barcelona – but the La Liga giants could not afford to keep him because of debt of over one billion euros ($1.1 billion).
Cristiano Ronaldo meanwhile joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in January on a massive deal until 2025.

TimesofIndia.com caught up with Hutchison, who played for Liverpool, West Ham United, Everton, Sunderland and other clubs, and scored 55 goals, to talk about the Champions League, the Messi vs Ronaldo debate, tactics of Klopp and Guardiola, and much more…
Who do you see winning the UCL title this time and why
It’s obviously between Real Madrid and Man City. But I think it’ll be Man City because of the form that they’re in. They are in tremendous form. They are on the top of the league (EPL). They’re an incredible team to watch. Grealish, Haaland are amazing. I think all the players for Man City are at the top of their game. It would be 60-40 in Man City’s favour.
Any team or teams which looked good for the Champions League title, but disappointed you?
The favourites are still in the competition. That was Man City and Real Madrid. These two are the favourites from matchday one. Liverpool have been really disappointing. Liverpool is the team that disappointed me the most. So, the two in-form teams and the two outstanding picks all the way back to day one in my opinion would have been Man City in Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi led Argentina to the World Cup triumph. Your take on Messi and do you think after winning the FIFA World Cup Messi has won the Messi vs Ronaldo greatness debate?
I don’t think anyone will ever win the debate. I think that’s a nonsensical argument in the first place. Why should we try and choose between two of the greatest players of all time when we should just enjoy them. I love watching Ronaldo. I love watching Messi. Over the 15 years period or more that they’ve been at the top of their game. They’ve both been examples for lots and lots of millions and millions of young players. The youngsters try and emulate and watch them both. They are both incredible.
How would you differentiate the skills and tactics of Juergen Klopp and Pep Guardiola?
Klopp said it over the years, ‘he’s heavy metal football’. And that’s how he wants his teams to play. So, Liverpool are fast and furious. They play with emotion. City are more calculated. They rely on the tactics, a little bit more. They can play a slower style of football that can dominate the ball and no one can get near them. But that’s why the matchups are amazing because we’ve seen Liverpool over the years beat Man City quite a few times and vice versa. So, once that fast and furious tactic comes up against the quality of Man City, it’s always an interesting dynamic who’s going to come out on top.

There are talks of Messi going to Saudi Arabia, but some feel he could maybe go back to his childhood club Barcelona, and Ronaldo could be back at Real Madrid. How big will that be for the football icons?
It would be pretty amazing. I could see Messi going back to Barcelona. I think that makes a little bit more sense. I’m not sure but I’d love it if Ronaldo goes back to Real Madrid. I think it’s a great story. I’m just not sure if the club wants to move in a different direction. But it would be fascinating. It would be amazing if the two go back to La Liga because they are (both) giants and heavyweights of world football – always have been and always will be great.
