AT least three wrestlers who deposed to the official Oversight Committee probing their allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, have raised concerns over the panel’s proceedings. In interviews to The Indian Express on the condition that they not be named, all the three wrestlers said they were asked to provide “video or audio proof” of their harassment. One said that she was told by a member of the committee that Singh was “like a father figure” and that she had “misconstrued” his behaviour “done in all innocence” as “inappropriate touching.” Another said that staff members of the WFI and a coach, all close to Singh, crowded the waiting area of the Sports Authority of India building, the venue of the hearings, an...

IPL 2023, GT vs SRH emotional rollercoaster: There was a big gulf in class as Titans sealed their playoff spot, showing Sunrisers the exit door

Unable to tackle quality bowling Mohammed Shami’s bowling in this IPL would not be out of place in a Test match, regardless of pitch conditions. The Sunrisers Hyderabad had seemingly no clue about how to combat quality bowling with the new cherry. The total they were chasing was not enormous so they could afford to give Shami the respect he deserved. But Anmolpreet Singh thought it fit to attempt a hoick off a back-of-a-length delivery, only to get a top edge that was caught at third man. Rahul Tripathi gave regulation catching practice behind the wicket as he guided Shami to Rahul Tewatia at slip. Abhishek Sharma had already been dismissed by a lazy waft off returning left-armer Yash Dayal. Even skipper Aiden Markram found Shami too hot to handle, a length ball taking a leading edge an...

Dismal show ends India’s Sudirman Cup campaign

It was a 5-0 rout at the hands of Malaysia as India were knocked out of the Sudirman Cup on Monday – the loss coming after a 1-4 downing by Taiwan in the group stage on Sunday. All the big names copped losses and there was little to salvage from the dismal performance as India’s hopes ended within the two days, with the final inconsequential Australia tie hopefully used to test the new names. On Monday, the results were abysmal. Dhruv Kapila had stepped in for Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in men’s doubles at the Mixed Asian Team event, but he was not very effective in the mixed doubles at the Sudirman Cup though Ashwini Ponappa and him tried what they could during the 21-16, 21-17 loss to the right-left combine of Goh Soon Huat/Lai SJ. In what were short rallies to begin with, the Indian duo...

ICC Cricket Committee scraps ‘soft Signal’ by on-field umpires, allows runs if ball hits stumps off free hits

The ICC has decided to do away with the contentious ‘soft signal’ by on-field officials, which had often been criticised by experts as it is believed to have created more confusion for TV umpires after a decision was referred upstairs. The ‘soft signal’ was used to determine the validity of catches taken inches off the ground, which couldn’t necessarily be confirmed through naked eye. According to ICC rules, a “soft signal is the visual communication by the bowler’s end umpire to the third umpire (accompanied by additional information via two-way radio where necessary) of his/her initial on-field decision prior to initiating an Umpire Review.” Till now the on-field umpire would either signal ‘out’ or ‘not out’ based on their gut feeling. And the third umpire was compelled to go by ‘soft...

Premier Australian spinner Nathan Lyon doesn’t want his team to panic in the upcoming Ashes like it did during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in India earlier this year. The Australians lost the series in India 1-2. Before the Ashes beginning June 16, India and Australia will fight for the World Test Championship trophy with the final scheduled at the Oval from June 7. “We shouldn’t panic anyway. We panicked in India and we saw what happened. If we can learn from that experience and play our way and our brand it will be okay,” Lyon told AAP. Dhoni — the ultimate outsider who became Chennai’s own

A special connection: CSK fans hold Dhoni in such high esteem, anything he does casts a spell on them. | Photo Credit: R. RAGU M.S. Dhoni’s influence on Chennai Super Kings has been far more than just developing an IPL team, and his approach far more holistic than focusing simply on cricket. Dhoni has always been a player who has worked to his rhythm, and as time passed, the tendency to assess the opposition for weaknesses has become more pronounced. This is Dhoni 3.0. His teammates have compensated for his almost total lack of time at the crease with the bat, but it also means the opposition has to adjust; he is not where he once used to be, batting at four or five, often barely involved in attacks until suddenly, lethally, he is.
