After CSK’s final league match, MS Dhoni signs Sunil Gavaskar’s shirt, throws tennis balls to crowd in emotional lap of honour

Even Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t resist the urge. Chennai Super Kings were featuring in their final league game at their home ground of MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite a six wicket loss, the mood around Chepauk was as celebratory as ever as it was time for the CSK players to thank their fans with a final lap of honour. So when MS Dhoni and Co shifted their attention to the post match ceremony, Gavaskar would approach the CSK skipper and ask for his autograph on his shirt. Dhoni would then lead his troops in a lap of honour, hitting tennis balls with a racquet into the crowd, and thanking the police officials present. Ajax Amsterdam-Groningen Dutch league clash called off after nine minutes after smoke bombs thrown onto pitch

Amsterdam: The Dutch league clash between Ajax Amsterdam and already-relegated Groningen was halted and then called off with only nine minutes on the clock, after fireworks were twice thrown onto the pitch on Sunday. In the sixth minute of the clash in Groningen smoke bombs were thrown onto the field. Shortly afterwards, a supporter ran onto the pitch with a banner calling for the ouster of the Groningen board, which saw the referee take the two teams off the pitch. When they returned, smoke bombs were thrown again, leading to the match being called off, in line with new Dutch football guidelines brought in earlier last month. It followed crowd violence in the Dutch Cup semi-final between Feyenoord and Ajax Amsterdam in early April when a cigarette lighter thrown from the crowd hit Ajax...

KKR stay alive after spinners, Rinku Singh & Nitish Rana breach MS Dhoni’s Chepauk den

SYNOPSIS: On the hottest day so far this summer in Chennai, MS Dhoni chose to bat first overlooking the dew factor. It meant the pitch behaved in contrasting ways, as Super Kings posted only 144/6 when it remained slow, before Kolkata made short work of the target. As early as the toss, MS Dhoni hinted how Chennai Super Kings will have to reassess conditions after the Powerplay, when the shine goes off the ball, to decide what will be a par total. Winning the toss, Dhoni chose to bat first on a pitch that he thought would get slower, provided there was no dew in the second half of the match. They had benefitted from one such bold call during their last outing here against Delhi Capitals last Wednesday. However, it is a bit like walking into the unknown, for the onset of dew could take t...

IPL 2023, CSK vs KKR Emotional Rollercoaster: MS Dhoni fraction of a second late, Narine finally strikes & Rinku nods to captain and does his own thing

Widest of wides MS Dhoni did not give Matheesha Pathirana that skin-scorching stare of his. Neither did he seethe with anger. With expressionless eyes, he got up, received the ball from the deep and under-armed it back to Pathirana, who had just bowled arguably the widest wide of the tournament. Nitish Rana bats left-handed, had he batted right-handed the delivered ball would have still been adjudged a wide. It was not a case of the ball slipping off the sweaty palms, but Pathirana missing the radar altogether. Dhoni still flung, not the full-pelt one though, and managed to brush the ball, though not prevent it from reaching the ropes. Maybe, Dhoni knew the cause was lost long ago. And in the next over, Rana, his opposite number, sealed the win with a thick-edged four. – Sandip G Varun ...
