Strategy to rotate bowlers helped us restrict Titans: Sanju Samson

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson attributed his team’s maiden win against defending champions Gujarat Titans to its strategy to rotate the bowlers, which helped the 2008 IPL champions to restrict Hardik Pandya’s side to 177 here on Sunday. After keeping the Titans to a manageable total, the Royals, despite getting a poor start and huge reverses in powerplay, were able to eke out a memorable three-wicket victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This is the Royals’ first win against the Titans as they had lost all three matches in IPL 2022, including the final. “I’m very happy to be on the winning side. I think it was very important to rotate the bowlers. They were going hard at our spinners. After the timeout, they were playing some quality cricket shots and we needed to respect that b...

Shimron Hetmyer, Sanju Samson star as Rajasthan recover from horror start to beat Gujarat Titans

SYNOPSIS: In a battle of powerhouses between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals, it came down to who blinks first. On an evening when both camps traded punches, Gujarat were short on answers for the heavy blows that Shimron Hetmyer landed. Overcoming starting trouble Chasing 178, at 4/2 with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler dismissed, victory seemed improbable for Rajasthan Royals, especially with the manner in which Mohammed Shami was making the ball talk. And when Devdutt Padikkal – who had counter-attacked a bit – perished in the ninth over with the total reading 47, it got even more uphill for Rajasthan. At the halfway mark, the required run rate had climbed to 12.50 and Rashid Khan still had three overs left. In the next over, Rajasthan would lose Riyan Parag too and by the end of...

GM Pravin Thipsay writes: In Game 6, Ding Liren won battle of errors against Ian Nepomniachtchi

The best sports coaches often tell their teams to keep it simple, especially under pressure. It’s seldom heard in chess, though. Yet, at the highest level – the World Chess Championship — sometimes, that’s all you need.In Game 6 of the Championships, Ding Liren kept it simple and was able to beat Ian Nepomniachtchi (Nepo) to level the score at 3-3. Had Ding lost this game, it would’ve been a huge blow to his chances of being the first Chinese Grandmaster to win the Championship. (You can also read GM Pravin Thipsay’s analysis for The Indian Express of  Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Game 4 and Game 5)In the games in which we’d seen a result so far, it has been one player who has dominated. Game 6 was totally different in that respect. It was more a battle of strategic errors and the one who ma...

GT vs RR, IPL 2023 Emotional Rollercoaster: Gill’s bragging rights, underrated Sandeep Sharma, bowlers get in a word and squaring of the heavyweights

Heavyweight contest It was punch and counterpunch towards the end – a couple of big hits followed by a wicket – that kept the contest on the edge. Rajasthan Royals seemed out of it in the first half of the chase before Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer brought them back. Then Dhruv Jurel and Ravichandran Ashwin played vital cameos, leaving Hetmyer to finish it off. With Trent Boult coming out as high as No. 9, the West Indian knew he had to do it all on his own. The team needed seven off the final over bowled by Afghan wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad. A sprinted brace was followed by pulled six as Royals got some semblance of revenge for defeat to the Gujarat Titans in last year’s final at the same venue. It also set down a marker for the other teams as they aim to go one step further in this e...
