Arun Singh Dhumal: ‘If there’s a window for a second IPL, we will definitely look at that’

In this Idea Exchange, Arun Singh Dhumal, Chairman, Indian Premier League, talks about the scope of Women’s Premier League, how player injuries have nothing to do with IPL and dealing with the world of betting and fantasy leagues. The session was moderated by Senior Assistant Editor Devendra Pandey. Devendra Pandey: Was there a concern on behalf of the BCCI on how the market would react to the Women’s Premier League (WPL)? We were never in two minds about it. We weren’t able to start earlier because of Covid. And given how our girls have performed over the last couple of years, be it the Commonwealth Games or the Asia Cup, they have done a phenomenal job on the field and it was the right time to start with this league. Premier League: Arsenal denied huge win by Liverpool to leave Manchester City within arm’s length

Arsenal’s grip on the Premier League title race was loosened as Liverpool produced a storming comeback to snatch a 2-2 draw in super-charged clash at a raucous Anfield on Sunday. The north Londoners were heading for a first league win at Liverpool since 2012 and a massive three points in their quest to win the league as they led 2-0 but Roberto Firmino headed an 87th-minute equaliser. It could have been even worse for Mikel Arteta’s side too as Mo Salah, who scored Liverpool’s first goal and missed a second-half penalty, blazed a late chance over and was then denied by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Ramsdale then made a miraculous save from Ibrahima Konate in a breathless period of stoppage time. When the dust settled on a rambunctious contest that had everything, Arsenal, bidding f...

Shikhar Dhawan blames batting unit for loss against SRH

A disappointed Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan blamed the batting unit for failing to mould their game according to the conditions as they lost by eight wickets to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL here on Sunday. Dhawan slammed a 66-ball 99 not out to carry the Punjab team on his shoulders as the other batters cut a sorry figure after being asked to take first strike. “As a batting unit, we lost too many wickets back to back and couldn’t put up a big total on the ground and because of that we lost the game. 175-180 would have been a reasonable score. The wicket looked quite good but it was seaming and swinging,” Dhawan said at the post-match presentation. On his sensational innings, Dhawan, who was adjudged the player of the match, said: “I didn’t expect I will reach there at the end ...

Ian Nepomniachtchi made it clear by the 8th move he was playing impotent and unambitious position

WHEN Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi made the eighth move of game 1 of the 2023 world chess championship, it was almost defined that the game was heading for a draw, which it eventually did. I felt that white was not playing ambitiously enough. It became obvious as early as the 8th move, after which it was just a routine play. I expected Nepomniachtchi to go in for a strategic battle but in the very first game he chose a line which has a strategic idea. It’s not a typical idea. In fact, it’s a line which the Soviet School doesn’t approve of. But they still have some theory after move 8. d3 is a normal move on move 8, but by playing d4 on the eighth move, Nepomniachtchi made it clear that he was playing a sort of impotent and unambitious position. A look at Ian Nepomniachtchi’s eighth move ...

Rinku heroics When Rashid Khan picked up his first IPL hat-trick it looked as if it is game, set and match. Kolkata needed 29 runs off the last over and after Umesh Yadav took a single off the first ball, it was over to Rinku Singh. He needed four sixes and a boundary or five sixes.
