WATCH: Goalkeeper Leandro Requena scores from goal kick in Chilean football league

Argentine goalkeeper Leandro Requena could enter history books after scoring from a goal kick in the top tier football league in Chile. In a game against Colo-Colo in Chile, Requena attempted a long-distance pass in the 77th minute to one of his forwards from his own box with the scoreline reading 2-0 in their favour. But to his surprise, the ball bounced over the head of Colo-Colo goalkeeper Brayan Cortés, who was way out of his line and then clearly misjudged the path of the ball.

In an interview with Radio Bio Bio, Requena admitted that initially when he took the shot, he felt instant disappointment because he noticed two of his teammates were unmarked at the other end of the pitch.

He added that Cobresal’s stadium, which is 2,400 meters above sea level, had played a role in the goal as the high altitude made the ball behave slightly differently.

TNT Sports Chile noted that the goal was scored from a distance of 101 meters. The current record for the goal scored from the farthest distance is 96.01 meters, scored by Tom King in 2021 during a match between Newport County and Cheltenham Town in England’s fourth tier.

The Chilean team said they would apply to have the goal ratified as the longest range goal in history by the Guinness Book of World Records.
