Watch: Mitrovic pushes referee, sent off in chaos at Manchester United vs Fulham

Fulham had two players and manager Marco Silva sent off in a frantic five minutes against Manchester United as their FA Cup dreams collapsed on Sunday. Leading 1-0 in the quarterfinal match at Old Trafford, the game was turned round after United was awarded a penalty when Willian handled Jadon Sancho’s goalbound shot. Aleksandar Mitrovic had put the visitors ahead in the 50th minute. Sancho looked set to even the score until Willian blocked on the line. VAR asked referee Chris Kavanagh to review the incident on the monitor on the side of the field, which clearly showed Willian used his arm to divert the shot. Silva was shown a red for remonstrating on the touchline and Willian was then sent off for the handball, which was a professional foul. Mitrovic was shown another red for his angr...

Sergio Perez holds off Verstappen’s charge to win Saudi Arabian GP

Sergio Perez won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and Max Verstappen drove from 15th to second to give Red Bull a 1-2 finish Sunday in what is shaping up to be a runaway season for the reigning Formula One champions. And there have only been two races so far. But it’s been two Red Bull wins, two 1-2 finishes, and an air of desperation from everyone else on the grid. Fernando Alonso finished third for the second consecutive race – it was his 100th career podium, and he’s only the sixth driver to reach that mark. But even as the Spaniard enjoys a renaissance with his new Aston Martin team, he acknowledged he had little chance at beating Red Bull. Verstappen won a record 15 races last season and a second consecutive F1 title, and Perez added another two victories as the 17 total wins in 23 rac...

PSG handed first Ligue 1 home defeat this season by Rennes

Paris St Germain suffered yet another setback as they slumped to their first Ligue 1 home defeat of the season when they were beaten 2-0 by Stade Rennais on Sunday. While they still lead second-placed RC Lens by nine points in the league standings, PSG were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich earlier this month and also eliminated from the French Cup by Olympique de Marseille in February. That left only the league title to focus on, and Sunday’s performance at the Parc des Princes exposed the capital side’s shortcomings and put further pressure on coach Christophe Galtier. Once again, their attacking plans were limited to finding Kylian Mbappe, while the defence was not up to the task in the absence of the injured Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos. Rennes, who prevailed w...

Devine’s blitz turns back the clock to McCullum’s inaugural IPL knock

In her hero’s footsteps: McCullum has been an inspiration not just for her, but for entire New Zealand, says Devine. | Photo Credit: PTI It should come as no surprise that Brendon McCullum is the biggest influence on Sophie Devine. “He has been an inspiration not just for me, but for entire New Zealand,” she had told The Hindu during an interview once. “He is aggressive from ball one, regardless of the situation.” That is the way she plays too. And, on Saturday night at the Brabourne Stadium, she played an innings that reminded cricket fans of a sensational knock her idol played a decade-and-a-half ago. McCullum’s 158 not out off 73 balls in 2008 had given the inaugural edition of the IPL a dream start. He had played that blinder for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers B...

DEEPAK Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made no excuses about his side’s shambolic batting performance against Australia on Sunday.“We didn’t bat well enough. Even when you lose a couple of wickets early, it is crucial to create that partnership so that you can get back into the game. Yeah, that’s about it. I don’t think we batted well enough,” he added. Nothing to panicThough the top-order has failed to get going in the first two matches of this series, the captain refused to press the panic button. “It has just been two games. The top order was on fire for our last six ODIs. So, not too much of a concern at all.” “Our guys have ...

DEEPAK From Saturday afternoon until a few hours before the start of the match on Sunday, the city of Visakhapatnam had been receiving persistent rains, and there were even doubts about whether a complete game was possible.Thankfully for the capacity crowd at the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Stadium, the sun came out just in time to get the second ODI going as scheduled. From then on, Mitchell Starc (five for 53) ensured that even if there were a threat of rain later in the day, it would not matter much as he blew the India batting line-up away in just about two and a half hours. The left-arm pacer produced a fine display of swing bowling to shoot out the hosts for just 117...

What I’ve observed was a player still super-confident: Gareth Southgate on Harry Kane post World Cup penalty miss

After missing a late penalty in the quarter-final defeat to France in 2022 World Cup in Qatar, England striker Harry Kane had said that he will be haunted by it forever. But given his excellent form for the Spurs, England boss Gareth Southgate doesn’t look worried at all. Since Kane has been on club business, Southgate says he has not felt the need to “interfere” with his proceedings and that he sees a player as hungry as ever to score goals. Kane has scored nine times in 17 games and recently overtook Jimmy Greaves’ record to become the club’s all-time leading scorer earlier this season and Southgate reckons he can replicate the same for his country. Kane could break the England record when their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign gets underway against Italy in Naples on Thursday night, fol...

Right-arm pacers have troubled us as well: Rohit dismisses pattern of failure against left-arm quicks | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has now twice got the better of India top-order batters in the ODI series but skipper Rohit Sharma refused it to be a pattern of failure against the left-arm quicks, pointing out that the team has also been troubled by the right-arm fast bowlers. In the first ODI in Mumbai, Starc ran through India's top order with a three-wicket burst and in the second game in Visakhapatnam, the seamer dismissed India openers Rohit, Shubman Gill and no.4 and 5 batters Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul respectively. The Indian batting order is dominated by right-handers and the likes of left-arm quicks Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Trent Boult have hurt India badly in the past. But, Rohit said the team management need not look into this as a matter of concern...

IND vs AUS: It is exciting to win a series in India, says Mitchell Starc | Cricket News – Times of India

VISAKHAPATNAM: Mitchell Starc, who set up Australia’s thumping 10-wicket victory against India with a five-wicket haul at the Dr YSR ACA-VDCA Stadium on Sunday, said that the strategy has been to get wickets in the powerplay and that it worked out well for them here.“It is not a new game plan as such, I have always tried to take wickets in the powerplay, and we were able to take six wickets in the powerplay today. Taking wickets in the powerplay is the way forward in one-day cricket as we can control the game from thereon. This is what we did today, and things fell in place,” Starc said after the match. Was it an advantage for him to bowl to right-handed batters? “It doesn’t work that way and not for me especially. I just like to bowl fast and keep the ball up and let it swing so it does...
