WPL 2023: Gujarat Giants’ Harleen Deol believes ‘cricket is everyone’s game’

Gujarat Giants superstar Harleen Deol posted a picture of herself on social media wearing a jersey which is captioned, “cricket is everyone’s game” during the ongoing inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) season.

The Giants cricketer posted the picture in the week of International Women’s day and the picture was captioned, “this is just the beginning”.

The inaugural season of the WPL promises to give a lot of young aspiring women’s cricketers a visible stage to showcase their skills for the world to see. The 24-year-old cricketer was brought by the Ginats for 40 Lakhs.

Indian cricket fans and the team management would be hoping this would lay the foundation for improving women’s cricket in the country. It would also hope that the WPL can do for the women’s game what the men’s IPL has been doing since 2008, both in terms of player finances and depth of quality players.

Despite a star-filled line-up, Deols’ Giants has been struggling in the season and are placed fourth table. Their recent defeat to Delhi Capitals by 10 wickets has been shot to their aspirations to qualify for the playoffs.

Shafali Verma smashed a 19-ball fifty as Delhi Capitals thrashed Gujarat Giants by 10 wickets in the Women’s Premier League at the DY Patil Stadium, here on Saturday. Marizanne Kapp returned with sensational figures of 5 for 15, while Shikha Pandey claimed 3/26 as Delhi Capitals restricted Gujarat Giants to 105 for nine after they opted to bat.

Chasing a paltry 106, Delhi cantered home in just 7.1 overs with Shafali taking the centre stage in her whirlwind knock of 76 not out from 28 balls (10×4, 5×6), her second fifty in the WPL.
