WPL: Hayley Matthews blazes a magnificent trail for Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Hayley Matthews has been the lone shining star in the West Indies side for a while now. A very reliable off-spinner, athletic on the field and most importantly destructive with the bat at the top, Hayley has got everything in her armoury. There is a reason why like many of her male counterparts, she is most sought after in T20 leagues around the world. On Monday, the 24-year-old lit up the Women’s Premier League as her all-round effort (3 wickets & unbeaten 77 off 38) helped Mumbai Indians make light work of Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne Stadium. Hayley is just 24, but ever since she burst into the scene as a childhood prodigy, she has been destined for bigger things and nothing illustrated it more than the 45-ball 66 she scored against Australia in the final of the 2...

WPL: We were below par, says RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana

Having suffered back-to-back defeats, Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana on Monday admitted that they were “below par” in their WPL match against Mumbai Indians but promised a strong comeback. Opting to bat first, RCB were all out for 155 and then saw MI chase down the target with as many as 34 balls to spare. “We would have loved to put up a better performance. We were below par. Will come back harder. There were two-three batters getting 20-30 runs, a few batters including me couldn’t put up a good score,” Mandhana said at the post-match presentation. “We will sit and talk and try to come up with a better performance. We had six-seven good bowlers. As batters we need to put up a good total on board. “It’s a pretty short tournament, we can’t dwell on it. In franchise c...

Remembering the glory days of the Holkars

C.K. Nayudu. | Photo Credit: The Hindu Archives The Holkars, those magnificent bunch of attacking cricketers who dominated Indian cricket in their time, lend Indore cricketing history and context. Between 1941 and 52, the marauding Holkars won four Ranji Trophy titles and reached the final on six occasions. Sunil Gavaskar’s tips for India’s batsmen on turning tracks: Light bottom hand on the bat, bend a little

IND vs AUS: By evening, after a harsh sun had beat down on the pitches at the stadium, a dust storm blew across Ahmedabad. Lightning streaked the sky that turned grey. Street dogs began to howl, and one mad dog sunk its teeth into the calf of a teenager at a bazaar. It felt like a scene from a retro movie poster. Indian batsmen would do well to seek some retro help of their own. If the performance analyst can grab hold of a VHS cassette of Sunil Gavaskar’s classic 96 from his last Test on a minefield in Bangalore against Pakistan – even YouTube has a decent one-hour version, and have them watch it, a method to bat can bubble up. Gavaskar has a suggestion, as told to this newspaper, and we shall come to it shortly but first the context. Two errors have been noticeable. When they have pre...

India vs Australia: Fans wary of another two-day Test, but rank turner unlikely

The late afternoon lull hadn’t curbed the enthusiasm of at least two young boys at the web-exchange ticket counter outside Narendra Modi Stadium. They were quick to hand over the physical tickets to those who had made online bookings for the series-deciding India-Australia Test that starts on Thursday. They were also prompt to inform that Day 1 tickets – when Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese will be in the stands to witness the start of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy – were sold out. “Modiji aane wale hain na (Modiji will come),” they say as a way of explanation. Most walking away from the counter had tickets for the second day of the Test. As they took the long walk to the main gate of the world’s biggest cricket stadium, they expressed...
