We had to suffer to win the World Cup say Argentina players

Argentina were made to suffer before landing their first World Cup title in 36 years, having twice squandered a lead, including in extra-time before edging past defending champions France 4-2 on penalties in the final on Sunday. “It was a game where we suffered,” said Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who saved one penalty in the shootout on Sunday but had also saved two more spot kicks in their quarter-final against Netherlands. On a night of high drama and fluctuating fortunes, Argentina squandered a 2-0 lead in regular time before going back in front in extra-time with Lionel Messi’s second goal. But then Kylian Mbappe completed his hat-trick to level 3-3 in the 118th minute with France’s second penalty that forced the shootout. “Two crappy shots and they (France) levelled. The...

Winning the World Cup meant a whole life to Messi — his pulse, his purpose, his true love

For Lionel Messi, this would be the sweetest night of all, yet it could have been his cruellest night. For much of the match, it seemed he would keep his date with destiny, rather destiny would keep its date with Messi. He saw it dwelling above his head when he looked up to take the penalty. He saw it winking at him when he threaded in the pass to Julian Alvarez that resulted in the second goal. He saw it over his shoulders when Argentina bit and barked their way to the back-end of the game. Then he saw it slip away, cruelly, without the time to register what he was watching. He saw it when Kingsley Coman snatched the ball and his dream from beneath his left foot. He saw it wither away when Hugo Lloris finger-tipped his devilishly late-swinging shot into the stands in the penultimate...

But France came back into the contest, scoring twice via Kylian Mbappe, with the first one coming off a penalty. Messi then scored again in the 108th minute, only for Mbappe to make it 3-3 in the 118th minute, again off a penalty. The match went into penalties and ended in Argentina's favour 4-2. (Reuters...

Who is Randal Kolo Muani, the French sub bringing in the sizzle?

Randal Kolo Muani, 23, was so stunned that he was called up for the national team, that he didn’t pick the first call that flashed on his phone. He would come into the final, an early sub and set fire to the dying embers of the first half, earning the penalty for Mbappe. The semifinal with Morocco had stayed on the edge despite Theo Hernandez scoring quite early for France, because Morocco kept pinging the French citadel, and late equalisers have been something of a theme. It was in these circumstances that substitute Muani sprinted in, and almost hit the ground running, steering in a pass like a neat hole-on-one putt from an Mbappe pass to puncture Moroccan hopes for good. But two months ago despite France reeling under a debris of injuries to big names Pogba, Benzema, Kimpembe and K...

Qatar’s 2022 World Cup ends with modest ceremony, titans clash | Football News – Times of India

DOHA: Tens of thousands of soccer fans wearing French and Argentinian colours gathered at Doha's Lusail stadium on Sunday where the 2022 World Cup ends with a dream-like scenario for Qatar: a showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, both stars of Doha-owned Paris St Germain. The throngs overcrowded Doha's metro with Qatar Rail delaying access to the stations as a modest closing ceremony kicked off inside the stadium where dancers celebrated "A Night to Remember". The stadium appeared almost full as the game started, with Argentinian fans vastly outnumbering the French. The crowd watched Qatar's air force planes flying over Lusail as the Gulf state also celebrated its national day, with thousands of police forces, including anti-riot units armed with water canons, securing the ar...

Gabba pitch was pretty spicy, didn’t allow fair contest: Dean Elgar

South Africa skipper Dean Elgar was critical of the Gabba pitch after losing the opening Test against Australia inside two days, terming it a “pretty spicy” track that didn’t allow a “fair” contest. As many as 34 wickets fell in two days as South Africa were bowled out for 152 and 99 with Australia claiming a six-wicket win. “Still trying to wrap my head around what’s happened. Pretty spicy wicket, bowlers were licking their lips. Challenging for the batters which is okay, but on the flipside I don’t see this as a fair contest,” Elgar said after the match.Subscriber Only StoriesPremiumPremiumPremiumPremium It was the second-fastest Test ever completed in Australia as only 867 balls were bowled, fetching 15 wickets on the first day and another 19 on the second day. “You’ve gotta ask your...

Shakib could play as pure batter in second Test, hints Domingo | Cricket News – Times of India

CHATTOGRAM: Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has hinted that skipper Shakib Al Hasan could play as a pure batter in the second and final Test against India next week. The spin all-rounder bowled only 12 overs during India's first innings and didn't roll his arms in the second essay due to rib and shoulder problems. His 84 in Bangladesh's second innings was one of the positives in an otherwise insipid performance, which led to the home team's 188-run loss. "He could play as a batter (only). Obviously he didn't bowl enough overs. He is still struggling with his shoulder and bruising. It left us with four bowlers - a big blow for us," Domingo said. Right arm medium pacer Ebadot Hossain was also unable to bowl in the second innings due to back injury. "Ebadot broke down, so we were stu...

Zakir’s ton on Test debut headlines Bangladesh’s spirited fight

CHATTOGRAMBangladesh showed it had the stomach for a fight and displayed more than just a semblance of spirit as it reached 272 for six, chasing a mammoth 513, at stumps on day four of the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Where the expectation on Saturday was for a Bangladesh roll over in the face of fierce scoreboard pressure, opener Zakir Hasan shunned the pessimism to score a terrific century on his Test debut (100, 224b, 13x4, 1x6).Made to orderThe 24-year-old had made his international bow nearly five years ago in a T20I match at home against Sri Lanka. That remained his sole outing on the world stage until the current Test, but the tag acquired then, of a T20 specialist, has stuck, despite having scored more than 1,000 runs each in the last two First Class seasons ...
